Description: Jadorin and Lymria are married.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 4, day 2 of Turn 5
Jadorin slowly buttoned his jacket, ran his hands through his hair,
then looked in the mirror. He was wearing his best suit, which he had
tailored himself, and it did look good on him. His shoes were
polished, his pants unwrinkled. Even his hair was behaving. A fellow
weaver had cut it for him the day before. Looking into his own brown
eyes in the mirror, he did not quite recognize himself. But, it
wasn't just the clothing. He did wear nice clothes, although not
often. It was the reality of what he was about to do. He was about
to get married. To a woman Turns younger than him, with three
children and one on the way.
"I must be crazy," he muttered to himself. In truth, he had avoided
thinking about the impending marriage since the decision had been
made. Maybe he should have prepared himself more, but he was afraid
he would run away if he really considered what he was doing.
Jadorin took a deep breath. He checked, again, for the mark in his
pocket. It was there. No more procrastinating. It was time.
Lymria had a bouquet of fresh flowers, dress that's cut hid her
expanding waist and her hair was arranged to braid-crown around her
head.
"You look pretty," Lyale said with admiring tone.
"Thank you dear, you're pretty yourself. Now, remember, after the
wedding is over, Jadorin will be your fosterfather or stepfather," she
glanced her own son, on Torgny's arms.
She looked thoughtful. This was her second wedding, a much smaller
afair than the first one. Her first husband, Omagi, had been old
enough to be her father (actually, he had three sons, the youngest
about Lymria's age). Now she married a crafter who she considered
friend but who she barely knew on deeper level. As a child, she had
dreamed of marrying a man she loved (and impressing dragon), now, it
looked that dream would never happen. It made her sad.
The walk from his rooms was short but cold air outside helped focus his
mind. Fortunately, the wedding would be brief, with little ceremony. He
stepped inside the main building, firmly sending his firelizard away.
Moments later, there she was with her children. "You look beautiful,"
Jadorin said, a wide smile on his face. Even though he could never desire
her, he could appreciate her beauty, the way her dress fit her, her
hairstyle.
"Thank you. You look very hansome yourself," Lymria replied with a
smile. The children took seats at the back of the room. She glanced
the waiting harper.
Kaltin smiled at the assembled group. The witnesses were there, as well
as the bride's children. The harper had his suspicions regarding the
reasons for such a hurried marriage, but it was not his place to ask too
many questions. Both bride and groom seemed willing and that was
enough for him.
"Welcome," he told the small group assembled. "I am pleased to be able to
officiate this marriage between Jadorin and Lymria. They will be
spending the rest of their lives together, with Lymria's three children and
any future ones they have together."
Jadorin concentrated on the harper's words, still unable to believe
that this was actually happening.
Lymria had to bit her lip not to giggle at the harper's reference to
the future children. They just might come along sooner than expected.
"Jadorin, do you have the mark?"
The Journeyman nodded to the harper. Every few moments since he had
slipped it in his pocket he had brushed a finger against his leg to make
sure it had not fallen out. He had an irrational fear of it disappearing
/between/. But, no, it was there.
He took it out, hand shaking slightly with nerves. "Lymria, I've enjoyed
getting to know you these past months. You make me feel at home when I
am with you and I love spending time with you. I promise to respect you
and provide everything you need. And our children," he looked briefly at
the three, "will have every opportunity available to them. From the very
beginning I thought of you almost as family and now I look forward to the
five of us becoming a family together." He had been practicing for days,
editing the wording many times. He didn't want to stretch the truth too
much, but he would have to get used to lying to her quickly to pretend he
loved her.
Kaltin nodded, smiling. "Lymria, do you accept the mark and Jadorin's
words?"
"I will accept your mark, Jadorin. I will promise to be a good wife
for you and good mother to our children, our own or adopted ones. I
promise to take good care of your household, to respect and honour
you. You have been wonderful: kind and understanding, even the
children like you," Lymria said when she took the mark. She too
avoided the word love.
Jadorin didn't know whether to be relieved or not at Lymria's words.
Either way, she had accepted.
"The mark has been accepted," the harper said, "and it is my pleasure
to be the first to congratulate you. You are now married. And," he nodded
to Jadorin, "You may kiss the bride."
The kiss was, fortunately, quick. Jadorin smiled and took Lymria's hand.
Even though he could never love her as a husband should, he would do
his very best to be a good friend and father.
