But Perhaps Later

Writers: AL, Cali

Characters: F'gol, Meledei
Description: Meledei offers to give F'gol a haircut after his burn.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 25 of Turn 5

F'gol ignored the amused look Meledei was giving him as she examined the burnt ends of what was left of his hair. The healer had applied salve to his blisters and said that air would heal it fast enough. "I know, I need a haircut now."

"Would you like me to give you one?" Meledei offered as she examined the very same strands of hair. It wasn't as bad as it _could_ have been. Hopefully F'gol would be more careful in the future.

He shrugged, though he had been hoping she would offer. "If you want. I'd look pretty stupid in class tomorrow if I left it. Not that it won't be noticeable anyway."

"It won't take long." Meledei moved over and gingerly ran her fingers over the site of the burn. "Does it hurt?"

F'gol gave a weak chuckle. "If I say no, does it make me more manly?" Her light touch made him shiver slightly and he hoped she didn't notice.

"Not really." Meledei released F'gol from her caresses, evidently oblivious to his reaction to her touch. "I can go get a pair of scissors and do it now if you want before our time is up."

"I'll come with you." Her weyr wasn't anywhere near his, but he didn't mind the walk.

"Okay." Meledei agreed readily and hopped to her feet. "Seriously, though, does it hurt? What did the healer say?"

F'gol followed her out the door and through the maze of corridors and stairs. "He said I was lucky and that I should have ducked. He said I'd be fine in a few days but that I might have scars if I didn't put on the salve. Hence the heavy coating currently mucking up my face and hair."

"You definitely should do what the healer's tell you." Meledei's tone was light, but she wasn't showing her concern. Yes, F'gol should have ducked. What would have happened had things gone worse?

F'gol nodded, enjoying all the attention Meldedei was paying him. "Don't worry. I will. I'll get scarred up from Thread soon enough, no need to add burn scars to it as well."

"I wish you wouldn't talk like that. Threadscore isn't pleasant." Her father had been scored several times, mainly during the first couple of Turns of Fall. Many had been. They had learned a lot since. "I don't like to think of you getting hurt."

He didn't reply. He knew she didn't like his realistic view on their chances of survival, but he didn't argue it anymore. Their simple exercises of going /between/ had proved fatal for two of their clutchmates already and they weren't even to Blooding yet. When they reached the door to her weyr, he held it open for her then followed her in. "I haven't eaten yet tonight. When we're done do you want to join me for a bite?"

"Of course." He didn't really have to ask. Meledei didn't take many meals without him these days. It was one of the few times they got to spend together after all and their freetime was so limited. "Come on, I have a pair of scissors in my drawer."

"Do you have any practice with this sort of thing?" He wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with a lopsided cut when she was done, though anything was probably better than the crispened side he had at the moment. "You'll probably have to cut it pretty close."

"Of course. I've cut my father's hair before on multiple occasions." Meledei moved to a small table that boasted a drawer and withdrew some scissors from it. She then grabbed her chair and moved it to Elleth's area where it would be easier to sweep out. "Sit and I'll see what I can do."

F'gol sat and closed his eyes as Meledei went to work. She was mostly gentle, only twice did he feel any real pain as she trimmed up the burnt chunks. When she said she was finished, he opened his eyes again and looked at the little hand mirror she offered him. "What do you think?" he asked, he'd never had hair that short before, it was something of a shock to him really.

"I think I prefer it a bit longer, but you still look good with it short." Meledei leaned over and rested her chin upon his shoulder. "Just don't go around getting your hair flamed any more."

He leaned his head so that it was resting against hers. She was so close, if he turned his head just a little... Still holding the mirror, he angled it so he could see them both and smiled at her. Now was not the time, but perhaps later. "I'll try my best. Come on, let's go eat."

Meledei pulled away, but there was a hesitancy to her movement. She smiled down at him and offered her hand. "Food sounds good. Don't want to starve the injured rider."
