"Ravyan missed you a lot today." Irlani commented as she passed the
greenrider's son back to her. She smiled at the child who hugged his
mother's neck tightly. The little boy couldn't quite understand why his
mother couldn't be there all the time even though Irlani had explained it
patiently multiple times. That wasn't anything unusual, though. The child
would understand when he got older. "He's been looking forward to seeing
you since I picked him up."
"Did you miss mommy?" Aileyan said and nuzzled with him before answering
Irilani. "I've had had some...love troubles and I guess he picks up that I'm
not my normal self," her smile was sad one.
Irlani's face creased in concern. "I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, children
pick up on things quite easily." She paused, then asked softly, "Want to
talk about it?"
Aileyan shrugged. "What there's to talk about? I found out he has another
one. I know, I'm rider, I should be used to it, but he is crafter and I
guess I expected more of him."
"Just because you're a rider doesn't mean you don't want to have a
monogomous relationship." Goodness, she'd been in the Weyr long enough to
realise that a lot of dragonriders did, which made it interesting
considering the sort of reputation they'd had when Irlani had stayed with a
friend at a Hold for a few weeks at one point.
"People expect riders to be frickle. And in the end, they are no different
than us. If they sleep around, they just don't do it openly," she nodded and
sighed.
"Not _everyone_ sleeps around." Irlani reminded her. "And if this man of
yours is doing that, I think you can find someone better than that."
"I thought...ah, nevermind" she shook her head.
"You thought what?" Irlani's eyebrows raised but her tone was gentle,
encouragement rather than a demand.
"That we could have something special. I thought I knew him. We were
childhood friends, you see," Aileyan told her.
"I do see." Irlani nodded slowly. "But people change. Perhaps he
changed. If he's not willing to save himself for you, then he's not worth
it. You find someone else who is."
"I hope so," Aileyan said. Her problem was that she didn't easily trust
people, especially men. Sometimes that made her lonely.
"Chin up." Irlani stated gently as she patted the younger woman's
shoulder. "Remember, you have Ravyan and he loves you fiercely."
"Yes, he is such a great joy," Aileyan said and smiled at her son.
"He is." Irlani agreed, "Just remember that, eh? I should go, they're
waiting for me. You let me know if you need to talk sometime, all right?"
"I will, thank you Irlani. We'll see you tomorrow morning," Aileyan replied.
"Take care, Aileyan." Irlani left them there musing over what the
greenrider had told her. She really hoped that she could come to terms with
the discovery - Ravyan was picking up on her distress and it wasn't good for
him. It wasn't really good for either of them.
