K'deren

K'deren

R'lenn unpacked the last garment and placed it in the chest at the
foot of his bed. His new weyr was smaller than the one he'd had back
at Dream's End, but it was more than adequate. Feeling a rush of
contentment from his dragon, already dozing in the sunshine on his
ledge, R'lenn knew that his brown felt the same. Once his unpacking
was finished, R'lenn decided it was time to eat something.

Unfortunately, he wasn't entirely sure he remembered where the Dining
Cavern was. He'd been shown. He'd had a quick tour when he'd first
arrived, but a Weyr is a big place and there was a lot to remember. He
was just heading toward the door to see if he could find it, when
someone knocked.

K'deren stood patiently as he waited. He could have had Donneth contact the
rider's brown, but he'd learned from experience that the personal touch went
down best with the newer riders.

The brownrider was surprised, pleasantly, when he opened the door and
saw the Wingsecond standing on the other side. "Hello, Wingsecond." He
smiled and stepped back a bit, gesturing for the other man to enter.

"K'deren, this isn't a formal occasion," his fellow brownrider said. "I just
thought I'd pop in and see how you were settling in."

"I am, thank you. All unpacked," he glanced around his weyr again. "I
was just about to see if I could remember where the Dining Cavern was
from my whirlwind tour earlier, actually."

"Well that I can help you with," K'deren replied. "Actually you are lucky
here, it isn't too far away."

"Excellent!" R'lenn moved to follow K'deren to the Dining Cavern with
an easygoing smile. "Being close to the food is always a plus."

"We set a good table here," K'deren said. "The cooks are among the best on
Pern."

"That's good to hear." Of course the same was said about the cooks at
Dreams End, and he imagined at every Weyr. Who claimed they had awful
cooks, after all? Or long tolerated a cook who produced substandard
fare? But, it was pleasant to hear good things about the food, none
the less. R'lenn did enjoy his food.

"And we have a Master Baker who specialises in the most wonderful sweet
pastries. I don't know how the Hall let him get away."

"Is that so?" Now that was interesting. There was nothing the
brownrider enjoyed in the morning better than a good sweet pastry to
balance out his klah, which he liked plain and bitter.

"Definitely, Tulender is well into his 70's now, but he has a group of
apprentices who are learning fast, although some of them are a little
dragonstruck."

"Weyrs lose more good cooks that way," the brownrider adopted a solemn
expression and sighed dramatically before grinning.

"They'll all just have to wait and see what the next hatching brings for
them."

"Like everyone else," R'lenn agreed with a small smile, remembering
the hatching that lead to his own Impression.

With those words the pair arrived at the dining caver. "Here you are."
