N'vanik

N'vanik

Muttering under her breath, Qorri was busily going through the
inventory list. Would there be enough flour to last till the end of
the month? Tallying amounts in her head, she made notations on a
separate piece of hide as she made progress.

"Hello?" N'vanik asked, leaning around the corner.

Her head came up quickly and when she saw who it was, her eyes
narrowed imperceptibly. "Weyrleader, what can I do for you?"

"Just wanted to stop by and say congratulations."

"Well thank you. Have a seat if you like." She didn't set her work
down, but she did set it aside. It seemed she was waiting to see what
he would do first.

N'vanik stepped inside and sat down. "I won't stay too long. I know
you're busy. So why were you crazy enough to take the job?" he joked.

She took a moment to measure him up and to consider her words. "It's a
good living. Better perhaps than I might do elsewhere." Really, it was
her security. It gave her something to do and somewhere to live. She
would eat.

"Did you grow up at the Weyr?" He wasn't good at small talk, but he
made the effort.

"No, I was a holder but you were too I'm told." Would he be angry that
she brought that up? She'd heard stories about him certainly.

He lifted an eyebrow. The gossipers were digging a little deeper into
his past, then. "Yeah, when I was young. So what brought you to the
Weyr?"

"Came with my husband." Obviously anyone knew she didn't have one now,
so she hoped that answered itself. Not that Qorri really cared for his
memory, but she hated to think about what he'd looked like, wasted and
small.

N'vanik thought she sounded like him, with her short answers. "Why'd he come?"

"He was a woodcrafter. Travelled all about." She frowned slightly,
then sat back in her chair.

Was. So he wasn't around anymore. "And you decided to stay."

"Seemed better than the alternative." She took a drink from the cup
she had sitting, making a gesture to him if he wanted some.

He shook his head at the offer. "I'll agree with you on that. I'm glad
you took the job. Not many people were eager to try to fill Ylisahn's
shoes."

"She was a good woman." Qorri remembered her well, though she hadn't
spent much personal time with the woman. "Once I get my feet under me,
I plan to do her proud."

"I'm sure you will." N"vanik smiled. "I suppose I should let you get
back to your work."

"Well I daresay you have duties of your own." Qorri quirked up one
brow as she finished off her cup and set it aside.

The Weyrleader nodded. "Plenty. Congratulations again." He stood.

She saw him out, thanking him for his visit, before she turned and went
back to her sums.
