"Hey, N'mor. How's life as a wingrider?" N'vanik asked the young man.
"Hello, sir. Just fine, sir," N'mor replied, feeling slightly nervous.
N'vanik lifted an eyebrow. "Fine? Is that all?"
N'mor looked hesitant. What else he could answer? Blurt out that he's
been with a man and traumatized with it? That his new wingmates pulled
tricks on the new guy?
"C'mon, N'mor. You can be honest. I won't tattle on you." The Weyrleader
smiled.
"I guess all new ones get to be the butt of pranks everwhere," N'mor
said. After all, he had seen it happen as an apprentice too, although
those pranks had been more innocent. Just hiding someones boots and
stuff.
"Pranks? Yeah, I suppose. Don't let them walk all over you, though."
"I can take care of myself," N'mor replied, hoping it sounded more
convincing than what he felt right now. Right now he felt very young
and inexperienced.
"Good." N'vanik thought he didn't sound sure about it. "But if you
need help, let me know."
"Of course, sir," N'mor replied, but inside he snorted. Right, run to
tattle to the weyrleader, what would the others think of that!
"Just remember that you're a rider, and you deserve just as much
respect as any of them." N'vanik would have solved that kind of
problem with a punch to the prankster's head, but he didn't think that
was N'mor's way of problem solving.
"Yes, sir," N'mor replied. The problem was that he didn't know how to
gain that respect. Punching people was not the way, he had tried that
as an candidate.
"And if it gets bad enough that it affects your performance in the
Wing, you need to talk to your Wingleader about it. Pride isn't worth
getting yourself or your dragon hurt over it." N'vanik needed that
advice himself sometimes.
"Yes, sir," N'mor just replied again. His pride has been knocked
around lately some badly that it wasn't the problem.
"And lay off the sir. You only have to use 'sir' if I'm mad at you."
N'vanik smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
"Okay," the young man smiled.
