N'vanik

The Headwoman had heard enough. Calla wasn't one of her prized
staffers by any means, but it didn't give _anyone_ the right to
take advantage of him. She would not have her people mistreated,
especially by riders who obviously didn't have a sense of common
courtesy.

She went straight to the Weyrleader, trusting him to deal with the
greenrider. Qorri was of the mind that he could deal with the riders
and she'd deal with her folk. It wasn't her place to be lecturing to
dragonriders about how to act, though she did make sure the candidates
got an earful before they were riders.

N'vanik happened to be in his office for a change. When she knocked,
he called for her to come in. "Qorri, what brings you here?" The
Headwoman did not look pleased.

"One of your riders, actually." She walked inside, but she didn't sit.
"Do you have a moment?"

"Sure."

"I have a staff member..Calla..he's a bit of a dimglow due to an
accident..hit his head. Anyway, I found out today that a wingrider of
yours took him to her weyr. I don't have a problem with that or the
fact that she had relations with him. My problem is that she left him
there with no way to leave, no way to contact anyone. So he was late
for his duties and he became agitated as a result." Qorri would never
admit it, but she had a soft spot for Calla. "He might not be quick,
but he shouldn't be taken advantage of."

"Who was it?" N'vanik asked. The act sounded either careless or mean,
and he wasn't going to let it slide for either reason.

"From what I get from Calla and the greenrider that got him down, a
woman named Varija," she answered readily.

"Varija," N'vanik repeated with a sigh. "You want me to call her in
right now so we can both give her an earful?"

"I trust you to deal with your riders appropriately, but you might let
her know if she doesn't want her food spat in, it might behoove her to
behave a little better." Her grin at that was rather wolfish, but she
did give a little wink before she left his office. Qorri had to make sure
that Calla had calmed down finally.

**Tell Attiath I need to see her rider in my office.**

Loseth passed along the message to the green, his tone carrying some
of his rider's annoyance.

Varija's eyes shone with eagerness when she hurried to respond to the
Weyrleader's summons, despite Attiath's warning that Loseth didn't
sound happy.

"You wanted me?" she asked upon her arrival, with a sultry and breathless
voice.

"Sit down."

"Yes, sir," Varija said, positioning herself carefully into the chair,
so her curves would show to their full advantage.

"So I hear you had a little fun with a kitchen drudge," N'vanik said,
ignoring her painfully obvious flirtation. "And then you left him
stranded in your weyr."

"Oh, that dimglow. I forgot him," Varija replied carelessly.

"So you didn't leave him up there deliberately?"

"No, I forgot. He was sleeping when I left. I planned to come back
after breakfast and take him down, but something came up and.." she
shrugged, which made her breasts heave up and down.

Negligence then, instead of being mean. "Then I guess you'll only get
elevator duty for two sevendays instead of a month."

"Elevator duty?!" Varija nearly shrieked the word. She hated the
elevator duty, taking stupid drudges up and down to clean weyrs. "What
for? Just because of one idiot half-wit?"

"Yep. Maybe it will remind you not to leave people stranded when
you're done having fun with them." He leaned forward a little. "And if
I hear about you being rude to the passengers, I'll extend your
punishment."

"This is so unfair," she grumbled and bit her lip.

"I think it's plenty fair. Your two sevendays start tomorrow."

Varija just looked at him and made her eyes as big and round as
possible. "I thought you liked me," she tried seductive appeal.
Arguing obviously wouldn't work.

"Never said I didn't. But you're still on elevator duty." N'vanik
wondered what was next. Was she going to try crying?

Varija did consider crying, but to her experience, it rarely worked.
It just seemed to annoy most people. You could get away with it if you
were under twenty, but when you were forty-something, it was just
ridiculous. She settled for an adorable pout.

N'vanik rolled his eyes. "You can leave now, Varija."

"Fine," she snarled, seething with anger. She would leave the drudge
alone from now on. He just wasn't worth the bother.
