"D'cal, is it?" Y'sani glanced down at his desk and then back up at the weyrling standing in front of him. "Come in lad and have a seat."
"Yes, sir." The weyrling walked in and sat as he was directed, eyeing the Weyrling Master warily. This was his third Weyrling Master, and so far he hadn't had much luck with any of them. Well, T'moran wasn't that bad, but J'darin... Shards _anyone_ had to be better than J'darin!
His wariness was obvious enough to Y'sani, who had noticed the same look in more than a few weyrling's eyes. Obviously they'd had more than their share of confusion. Well, now that he was here, he could take care of that.
"Relax, D'cal. Outside of this office I'm your Weyrlingmaster, but right now I want to talk to you man to man. You're one of the older weyrlings. How do you think things have been going for all of you over the last few months?"
"Well, sir," D'cal said, still not sure what to make of the new Weyrling Master, "I think things have gone well. We have had a few training accidents, but no permanent damage done, thankfully. But we have learned what was expected of us, and I think most of us are quite good."
"Have you noticed any of the younger ones having problems? Having so many different teachers can't have been easy for them." The weyrling nodded. "A few of them were rather attached to J'darin,"
though he couldn't for the life of him figure out why! "But they understood that he must be Weyrleader now. I think they miss having him here, but are... proud that they were taught be the Weyrleader."
"Well, there's nothing wrong with that." Y'sani sat back and raised an eyebrow. "Do _you_ have any questions for _me_?"
"Will our graduation to the wings be delayed at all, sir?" D'cal knew they were needed in the fighting wings as soon as possible, but being without a Weyrlingmaster, no matter how qualified his Second and assistants were, might have set him back a bit. "There have been some rumors."
"I can't say anything for sure until I've had a good chance to observe you all," Y'sani replied, knowing that this would be the question on _all_ of the weyrling's minds. "But I expect from what I've seen that any delay would be fairly minor." The weyrling nodded, relieved that it would not be long. He knew how desperately they were needed in the wings, and though the thought of facing Thread, especially having seen what it could do, frightened him a bit, he knew they were needed. "Then we will go ahead with the Blooding as scheduled, sir?"
"I'll let everyone know the schedule by the end of the next sevenday,"
Y'sani promised. "I want to make sure I've met with all of the weyrlings personally first... I won't be sending anyone up against Thread until I'm confident that they've gotten all the training they need." And the fact that so many Weyrlings were worried about filling out the empty spots in the wings spoke well for the kind of riders they'd become, but Y'sani wasn't going to rush their training and lose them for the lack of a little care.
D'cal nodded. "Yes sir. I understand."
"Good. Anything else you have questions about?" The weyrling shook his head.
Y'sani grinned at him and stood, offering a hand. "Then I'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning for drills. It's good to meet you, D'cal."
"You too, sir," he said as he took the hand offered. A tentative hope built in him that perhaps, just perhaps, he could relax and enjoy his last few sevendays of weyrlinghood.
