Description: Varija says the wrong thing to N'vanik.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 12 of Turn 5
N'vanik walked down the hall, lost in thought. He was trying, once
again, not to think of Trae so he had to fill up his mind with
anything else he could.
"Yo-hoo, N'vanik," Varija called and waived furiously. She hurried her
steps to catch up the Weyrleader.
"Hi Varija." He couldn't decide if he was relieved or annoyed that
she'd interrupted his thoughts. Maybe a little of both.
"I heard about Traelyn. You must be devastated," she said.
He shrugged. "It hasn't been easy."
"I'm very good at comforting and distracting," she chirruped perkily
and wrapped her arms around his neck.
That kind of distraction would be nice, but Varija was too clingy for
his tastes. The idea of trying to disentangle himself from her after a
roll in the furs seemed like too much work. N'vanik pulled her arms
from his neck. "Maybe some other time."
"You always say that," her arms fell limply to her side and she
sounded frustrated.
"Because you're too clingy." He'd spent too much time lately holding
back his emotions and trying to be tactful. He didn't have enough
patience left.
"I'm not clingy," Varija denied it hotly. "You just don't know how to
appreciate a caring, nurturing woman like me," she continued. (Her
daughters would have used words over-protective and suffocating).
"Nurturing? Is that what you call it? Maybe you could find some
Candidates that need nurturing." His mouth was running away on him,
but he had to admit it felt good.
"Why do you treat me like this. Don't I mean anything to you anymore?"
she was talking like they would have been something more than passing
bed partners in the past.
He almost laughed. "You never meant anything in the first place."
"What a thing to say for a woman. No wonder you don't have luck with
goldriders and have to settle for wretched dragonless rider who doen't
know better," Varija sniffed with injured tone and then continued with
malice.
He balled his fist, and the restraint it took not to hit her actually
made him shake. Out on the heights, Loseth roared. N'vanik grabbed her
tunic and shoved her against the wall. "If you ever talk about Tal
like that again, I'll make sure you regret it."
Varija paled and looked frightened, shrinking back from him.
"You hear me?" N'vanik shook her.
"I hear you, I'm sorry," she said with small, tear chocked voice. She
was suddenly 15 again and the man was looming over her and it hurt!
She sobbed.
A touch of guilt softened his anger and he let her go. "Good."
Varija pulled away from him.
"Whatever you're looking for Varjia, go find it somewhere else." His
voice was soft now, rather than angry.
"Yes..." she had to clear her throat to get her voice out,"I will."
He had given her a real fright.
N'vanik stepped past her and went down the hall. He felt a little bad
about scaring her, but Varija shouldn't have said something like that.
Varija decided that she didn't not want company just right now and
called Attiath to pick her up, so she could retreat to her weyr and
brood over it. Lot of things were bringing up painful memories from
the past and she was starting to worry.
