Characters: Meledei, Janani
Description: Just like Janani did, Meledei thinks back on one of her earlier interactions with Janani.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 25 of Turn 5
Meledei slipped out of the office and closed the door behind her. The more she worked with Janani, the better the young goldrider liked her. And she hoped, Janani felt the same way. She had worked harder than before, mainly because she had someone who _cared_ about what she was doing and what training she was receiving. That helped a lot.
The girl smiled. She had tried so hard to please Janani. Generally, it was Meledei's way to be friendly, but she had tried particularly hard with Janani. A goldrider was coming to help _her_ out with _her_ training. Not only had Meledei wanted to get and stay on friendly terms, but she wanted that goldrider to stay longer and take up a more permanent leadership role in the Weyr. She hadn't realised it at the time, but looking back, Meledei realised she had sort of been wanting a replacement for Traelyn. Her thoughts whirled back to one of the earlier interactions with the goldrider.

The bundle was tucked under her arm, carefully wrapped. Meledei came to
stop at the door of the Weyrwoman second's weyr, rapping lightly, then
taking a step back so as not to crowd the entrance. She never liked it
when
people hovered so close they were almost in your face as soon as one
opened
it.
Janani opened the door and smiled. "Well, hello, Meledei. Come on in," she
released the door and turned back into her weyr. "What brings you here
today?"
"Hey Janani." Meledei steppe inside glancing around as she did so. Some
things had changed, but not enough time had passed for Janani to have a
chance to do much. "I brought you something." She turned and held out
the
carefully wrapped bundle.
"Oh, something for me?" She asked as her eyes lit up. Who wouldn't like a
bit of a surprise present. Taking the bundle she walked over to the small
table and sat it down as she began to unwrap it to reveal what was inside.
"Yes, I thought you would like it." Meledei watched as Janani pulled the
tapestries from the bundle. They weren't large, but they were pretty.
One had dragons swirling all over it on a background of dark blue, as if
flying at night. The other had flowers on a similarly coloured background
in complicated twists and turns. She had thought they were pretty. "I
thought maybe they would help you feel at home here."
"They're wonderful!" Janani replied happily, running her fingers over the
skilled weaving. "Where did you find them?" She let the first one hang
down
so she could better admire the colors of the flowers against the
background.
The work was intricate and detailed and rather complicated in spots. "I
have
a tapestry of my own back at River Bluff that would go well with these. I
think I'll send for that one for sure." She smiled to Meledei, happy to
feel
that she had made a friend at Dolphin Cove so easily.
"I found them in one of the storage closets." It was definitely a nice
fine, though Meledei had wondered why they were there. Had they been
someone's who died in Threadfall? Meledei decided she didn't mind not
knowing. "Thought it might help brighten up the place a bit since you
don't have access to all of your own things."
"Thank you, Meledei." Janani beamed a smile at the younger rider. "Would
you
help me hang them up? Then perhaps we could go see what other treasures
might be found in some of the storage closets." It might be interesting to
see what was packed away from turns of non-use.
"Sure, I don't mind at all." Meledei had some free time and she already
liked Janani. This would only give them a chance to get to know one
another better and a good working relationship could only be helped bout a
good outside relationship. "Where do you think you want them?"
"How about right over there?" Janani pointed to a rather empty wall in the
weyr. "I think it will add just enough color if we put the dragon one
there,
and everyone will see it when they enter, too." She paused for a moment as
she circled the room, "I think I'd like to see the flowered one the moment
I
wake up each morning. Why don't we hang it directly across from the bed."
Janani moved around the weyr knowing Meledi would be right behind her to
help her with the task.
"That sounds like a good idea to me." Meledei stays on Janani's heels
more than willing to help with the hanging. "Do you have the tools to get
them on the walls?"
She turned from where she was already holding the tapestry up to the wall
and looked at Meledei for a moment in silence. Then with a sigh, she
lowered
the tapestry and tucked it into a ball.
"Perhaps you can help me find the right tools? I'm afraid I don't have
anything of the sort here."
"Sure, that won't be a problem at all." Meledei glances around, then
turns and heads out of the weyr. She trots out into the hallway and down
toward the closest storage closet. There she finds what she needs nad
returns quickly enough. "All right. Now we can hang them."
"Wonderful!" Janani exclaimed. "Meledei, you have truly been a gem since I
arrived here! I don't think my time at Dolphin Cove would have been nearly
as pleasant had we not met that first day." Within moments, the tapestries
were hanging just where Janani wanted them to be. Slapping her hands
together happily, she smiled at the goldrider. "Now that that's done, what
shall we do with ourselves?"
"Why don't we go sneak into the kitchen." Meledei's eyes took on a
mischevious twinkle and her smile lit up her face. "And steal some bubbly
pies."
"Now _that_ sounds like something worth doing!" Janani replied with a
glint
in her own eyes as she turned to lead the way out of the weyr.
---
Things hadn't changed all that much. Meledei still liked Janani. She was
still glad she had come. The woman paid attention to her. Not in a bad
way, but she was trying to teach Meledei her duties and the proper way to
do them rather than let her flounder. Meledei smiled at the woman as she
explained some of the politics that happened. Yes. Janani was a good
addition to the Weyr and Meledei hoped that, maybe, just maybe, she would
decided to stay longer than originally planned.
***
Yes. She had wanted her to stay longer. And Meledei got her wish. A smile slipped over her lips as she traversed down the hall. The Weyr was in good hands.
