The newest candidate

Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 4 of Turn 6

Meledei couldn't help but be curious about the newest candidates. Before
she had always met them because she had been a candidate herself. She was
often the first candidate the new ones met. But since her Impression, she
wasn't quite in the same loop as before. Nor would the relationships be
quite the same. A lot of things had changed.

And yet, she still wanted to meet them, wanted to see who was there, what
they were like and offer herself as a resource should anyone have any
questions. So when she heard about the newest one, the goldrider set out
to meet him, heading to the barracks as soon as she had a free moment.

Xorian was still getting his stuff unpacked and in their places. It was
like being back in apprentice dorm. And he had thought he was rid of that
when he got his first hold-assignment! The white candidate robe he had
been given was neatly folded on his cot. He saw the young woman coming and
recongnized the knots. "Ma'am? Anything I can do to help you?" he asked.

Meledei's face broke out in a smile and she shook her head, long braid
whipping behind her. "Oh no, I was just coming to meet the new
candidates."

She let her gaze fall upon the items still being unpacked. "And from the
looks of things, I just met one. Hi, I'm Meledei!" She offered her hand
to the young man, smile still bright.

"Xorian, journeyman healer and erh... candidate," Xorian shook her hand
with friendly smile on his face. "I still haven't used to say that."

"You'll get used to it." Meledei's grip was firm but gentle. She gave
the gesture, then let her hand fall back to her side. "Where are you from?"

"Originally or most recently?" Xorian asked.

Meledei couldn't help but laugh and she flicked her fingers in a vague
gesture. "How about both? Where are you from originally? And recently?"

"Orginally, from Lazur Lake hold. Recently, I have been assigned to a
small sea hold near Topaz Sea hold," Xorian replied with smile. He was
happy he made the goldrider laugh.

"Ah, I see. And that's where you were searched?" Meledei stepped around
to take a closer look at the barracks. Nothing had changed. Of course,
why should it? It just...well, she had graduated and wondered if things
would look different since then. No, they looked the same, even if she
herself wasn't the same.

"Yes, ma'am," Xorian said. He had gotten his bags empty and now folded
them and stoved them out of the way.

"Just call me Meledei." The goldrider just wasn't the sort to be so
formal, unless people were being disrespectful to her. Then she would
insist on formality. "Do you need anything/ Would you like a tour of the
Weyr?"

"I don't need anything," **Except Kaitien.** The thought brought in sadness
with it. He pushed feeling aside. "I could use a tour though," he said with
more brighter tone.

"Then a tour you shall have. After dinner? I'm afraid my day's not done
just yet, but after dinner I'll be free. In fact, I can come get you and
show you to the Dining Hall if you want." Meledei suggested, motioning in a
general direction. "Then give you a tour of the rest of the Weyr
afterwards."

"Sounds good to me. I haven't learned my way around here yet," Xorian
agreed.

"It'll take some time, but don't worry, people are always willing to give
directions." Meledei assured him with a laugh. "You get unpacked and
settled, I'll be back in a few hours to get you for dinner. And any other
candidates who might want to come, though I'm sure you'll have more than
just me as an escort."

"All right, sound like a plan. I'll see you then, Meledei," Xorian grinned
back.
