Description: Janani has a flashback to another Turn's Beginning back at DFW
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 30 of Turn 5
Her fingers twirled the glass in her hand as she watched the
party-goers enjoying their evening. She, too, had had her turn on the
dance floor. Yet, now, she sat, watching the others make merry while
she found herself sitting alone, in silence. True, this time, it had
been her doing. She'd begged off quite a bit of the attention, wishing
for just a moment's peace. Apparently being Weyrwoman meant dancing
with every blasted soul that lived in the Weyr at Turn's Beginning.
She just needed some time alone, and had chosen this corner for that
very reason.
Her thoughts drifted back to another Turn's Beginning, many, many
turns ago. She'd found herself sitting alone that night as well.
Though the reasons were far different then, than they were now.
~Begin Flashback~
Her eyes darted around the room at the young couples pressed closely
together. She smiled and nodded to her closest friend when she'd
looked her way before turning to leave with her arms around one of the
other riders.
Janani hadn't meant to find herself alone, but she didn't feel the
same freedom her greenrider friends had. Even now, as she glanced
across the room, her eyes fell on the Weyrwoman. Why did she have to
remind her of all the things her mother had taught her? Janani ground
her teeth
together. She _wasn't_ in the hold any longer, yet she still could hear
her mother's voice _every_ time the Weyrwoman looked her way. It was
almost
as though she was somehow checking up on Janani, making sure she didn't
forget the morals and values that had been so important to her mother.
When the
Weyrwoman glanced her way once more, Janani couldn't take it any longer.
Thrusting her glass down with a thump, she pushed back her chair and
turned to leave the hall. She would _not_ subject herself to the
scrutiny of that woman for another moment. Hands fisted at her side,
Janani couldn't wait to get out of the hall, to find somewhere where
she didn't have to think about _expectations_, where she could _be_
the person she was destined to be.
It was as she was so wrapped up in her thoughts, that she ran
smack-dab into someone with an ompf. "Get out of my way," she snapped,
not feeling very civil at the moment.
"Whoa, where are you going?" U'kaiah asked, reaching out to grab her
arms to steady her.
"Anywhere but here," she ground out, looking up and trying to glare at
whomever had intruded on her thoughts. When her eyes caught sight of
U'kaiah, she paused.
The bronzerider was a little surprised by her venomous reply. Janani
had always seemed to steady! She certainly was in a state, and had she
not stopped and looked straight up at him, he would have been more than
happy to just let her be. But her look confused him. "Are you all
right? Do you need someone to go with you?"
She heaved a sigh, "I just want to get away." Janani felt like she was a
child caught red-handed once again. Her mother's disapproval evident
after whatever her latest escapade had been. They'd loved each other
very much, but no matter what she did, Janani often felt that she had
let her mother down in some way. "Everyone else, was..." She glanced
back over
her shoulder, gesturing towards the celebration that was still going on
in full swing. "I think the Weyrwoman hates me," she blurted out. Her
cheeks turned a right shade of crimson at her little outburst.
"What?" U'kaiah asked, genuinely surprised. "No one hates you, Janani.
What would make you think such a thing?"
She clutched her hands together as she frowned up at him. "Every time I
look at her, it just seems like...well...its like I can hear my mother's
voice telling me what is right and what is wrong. I _swear_ the
Weyrwoman looks at me the exact same way!" She felt foolish for saying
it, but it
actually felt good to get it out. "It's stupid. Nevermind. I just needed
to get
away from the party. I can't even _think_ when she looks at me like
that!"
Shards, she was really bothered by something, though U'kaiah couldn't
quite understand just what it was. "All right, listen, let's go get you
some air. I think you'll feel better." He began gently pulling her
towards the entrance.
She let him lead her away from the celebrations and out into the bowl.
The further away she got from the thoughts that had plagued her the more
angry at herself she had become. How had she let her emotions over this
whole
thing get the best of her? She knew she was better than this, but the
feelings still coursed through her.
Once they were out in the fresh air, she shook her head and looked up at
him, "I wish sometimes I hadn't been born in a sharding Hold, and I'd
been born here like you and the others. Then, I wouldn't find myself
bothered
by stupid ideas that I can't change!"
"Like what?" he asked, not quite sure which ideas she was referring to.
"It doesn't matter," she said with a wave of her hand. Turning back to
him she eyed him up and down, "But I know one way I can leave those
issues
behind." Janani stepped up to him. "Kiss me."
U'kaiah was rather surprised. Janani had always seemed to be a little
hidebound and prudish, being raised in a Hold and all. He knew she was
no virgin, but he had never seen her with a man either. Still, the
bronzerider was not one to think twice when an opportunity like that
presented itself! Taking her face in his hands, he pressed his lips to
hers without hesitation.
She pressed herself into the kiss, savoring the taste of him, feeling
triumphant that she may have, at least, put the _expectations_ of her
former life behind her. Then, she felt a different sort of stirring
growing within her. No longer bent of simply proving herself to herself,
Janani
felt her body reacting to his presence, his kiss, his touch on her face.
Feeling her relax into him, and respond in kind, his hands slipped down
to the small of her back, gently pulling her even closer as he kissed
her a bit more aggressively. She might have seemed above such things,
but he was pleased to see there was a spark of passion underneath that
reserved exterior, and he loved the challenge of pulling it out of her.
She enjoyed the kiss, her hands sliding up to his shoulders. As her body
started to react, Janani pulled herself back, not wishing to lose
complete control of herself.
"Thank you. I needed that," she stated a bit breathlessly.
U'kaiah's breathing was still a bit fast and he made no move to remove
his hands. "Are you sure you don't need just a little more? Just to
tide you over?"
She contemplated his question with a twinkle in her eye. "Hmm, yes, I
think I bit more would be just perfect. To tide me over, like you said,"
she'd hardly finished the words when her lips moved to meet his once more.
--- End Flashback---
She couldn't help but smirk a bit at that memory. She'd been so much younger, yet in a way that time had helped her shed some of the inhibitionsshe had brought with her to the Weyr. She wondered, as she finished her drink, what U'kaiah was up to this Turn's Beginning. It would be interesting to find out!
