Flipping through the names of Candidates, he frowned over it all. With no Weyrlingmaster, Weyrlingmaster Second, or even a Headwoman currently, there were few people but he and Xuxha to discipline candidates and Weyrlings. He should let Traelyn handle the Candidates, he thought absently, or Jyramikah.
Women would be infinitely better suited for it than he, since he couldn't abide when they cried. But today he wasn't punishing anyone, just fulfilling his promise to Almonteo for sending him some Candidates. He didn't know if a girl would be a help, but he was sending her anyway. He'd seen her spending a great deal of time with the young riders, and thought she might do something better with her time. Kirranna, that was her name. He had asked her to report to him here via a drudge, and Oak was waiting on the back of his chair chittering with interest over the hides. Kirra knocked a little timidly at the Weyrleader's office and opened the door slightly.
"You sent for me Sir?" She had seen the new Weyrleader around before but she had never met him. She didn't want him to think she was too intimidated by him, but somethings you just can't help.
"Ahh..yes, Kirranna, isn't it?" He paused, waving her in. "Come in come in..I've a project for you and a few other Candidates. With very little other staff, its falling to me to assign you duties. So, sit sit. I'll tell you what I need." The Weyrleader looked without really seeing at most people, especially young women - unless they were flirting with him! He always noticed that.
"Yes sir." She walked into the office and sat at one of the chairs infront of his desk. Kirra knew that the Weyrleader was definately not a great supporter of women in crafts and in positions of leadership, so she tried to keep her eyes down, but couldn't help her curiosity when this was a chance to get to look at the Weyrleader up close.
**He's pretty young still, and isn't ugly. I don't think I'd like his indifference to women though...** Kirra caught herself judging the bronzerider with out even knowing him and blushed. She hated when she did that. J'darin didn't pay much attention, but he did focus on her finally. His blue eyes were warm enough as he looked at her, shining brightly with intelligence and pride. "You're settled okay? I know you've been with us a while." He asked. If nothing else, he was polite and did his duty when required. Kirra responded to the visible warmth and intelligence by smiling brightly and nodding, "Yes sir, I'm very comfortable here. I came form Dolphin Hall so my parents aren't so far away that they can't come visit, or visa versa." "Good, good. Always good to settle in. You'll be used to Crafters, then. What I want you to do is spend the next two days helping the Harper Hall - Master Almonteo there - get settled in themselves. Do whatever he asks, as I am sure he'll know how best to use you. Do you think you can do that?"
"Yes Sir." She nodded. She had been wanting to meet some of the Harpers but didn't want to intrude while they were moving in. "That's good, Kirranna. Please report to Hallmaster Almonteo after breakfast tomorrow, aye? And good luck to you." The Weyrleader offered with a faint smile. Kirra nodded and smiled as she got up, "Thank you, Sir." She looked towards the door, "Am I excused sir?" "You are, Candidate Kirra. And my sincere thanks for coming, I will mention it to those in charge of your training. See to it you do whatever the Hallmaster asks, now, lass!" He said in a friendly sort of fashion, smiling at her again in a very genuine offer. She smiled broadly back **He seems to be a nice guy...** She inclined her head slightly in thanks, "I will work as hard as I can Sir." and with that she stepped brisk and confidently out the door.
