The Headwoman had posted duties and chores for the candidates under her charge for the day. They were divided into groups for the most part, though the ones with special skills might have different duties. Of particular attention was Taeshin, who had run afoul of the queenriders. Smiling to herself, she decided to take the boy aside and impart a bit of advice to him. "Taeshin, come here boy. I'm about to tell you something that will save you a lot of grief."
Taeshin looked up from scrubbing a the table in the Dining Cavern. Today he had been assigned to help clean the enormous place, a task he was none too thrilled to have. He threw the almost threadbare piece of cloth he had been using to polish the wooden table over his shoulder as he walked towards Qorri. "Yes Headwoman?" he replied to the very important woman who basically dealt with the day-to-day and more mundane business of the Weyr, without whom the Weyr would probably devolve into chaos.
"Listen close now," she warned him. "Whenever you come across someone that outranks you, keep your mouth shut. If they ask you questions, you say yes or no. Then you don't find yourself in business like this."
Taeshin looked at the Headwoman in surprise. He didn't know that she knew the situation as well. Then again, why wouldn't she? Weyrfolk were notorious gossips. He gave her a defeated look and simply nodded at the advice she gave him. "Yes Headwoman," he repeated.
"There, now you have it." She grinned. "I think if you behave yourself, you might find your extra duties gone after a month." Qorri didn't quite know just what Janani would do, but she knew what she would do. Taeshin was young and stupid and let his hormones and feelings lead him.
Taeshin looked at the Headwoman with a glimmer of hope in his eyes, though not a lot. As much as he hated doing the extra chores, he was more concerned with Janani and Angdelouth approving him to stand for the next Hatching. And if that meant cleaning this Dining Cavern from top to bottom everyday, well he'd just grit and grin and get it done.
"Don't worry...in a Pass they can't be as selective about candidates as they used to be. And I'll put in a good word for you if you pull your weight and refrain from acting foolish." She put a hand on his shoulder, knowing it was part of growing up.
Taeshin looked at the Headwoman, then to her hand on his shoulder. He gave her a genuine smile before nodding his head in appreciation. "Thank you Qorri," he said, all smiles and mirth, his usual jovial self.
"You're welcome, but if you make a fool out of me, you've had it boy. I'll have you scrubbing floors till your last days!" She left out most of the bite in that threat, but who was Taeshin to know if she didn't mean it really? "So what else is happening?"
Taeshin thought about the question. There was nothing really new going on in his life. Other than the efforts to help with the clean up after the hurricane, everything was basically the same. He shook his head and grinned at the Headwoman.
"Everything is the same Headwoman," he answered her.
"No new friends or anything? Son, you need to be more social." Isolating oneself didn't help things.
Taeshin looked at the Headwoman a little shamefaced. Since word had gotten out about his little problem with attitude control, no one had really come seeking out Taeshin's company. And now that he was on extra duties assigned by the Weyrwoman and Headwoman, he really didn't have the time or inclination to be overly social. "I will try," Taeshin responded, thinking that if his work load lightened anytime soon, he would do just that.
"Good. I'll leave you to it then." She went on her way, determined to put the rest of her candidates on track. The Weyrwoman would not find fault with Qorri's Weyr.
Taeshin looked at Qorri as she walked away. His brow was lifted in a quizzical expression, but a smile crept across his face. He liked Qorri and her straight forwardness. He went back to polishing tables, with a little more pep in his step than before.
