Description: A new candidate gets settled into the barracks
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 13 of Turn 6
The Headwoman was notified that she had a new candidate. Pulling away
from her kitchen duties, she headed out in search of the girl. They
had finally gotten the barracks put back together, thank Faranth. She
needed to get her settled and let her know what would be expected of
her.
Pierka had gone back to the building after finishing her lunch but
once she recovered her small bag she wasn't quite sure who she should
talk to. Everyone seemed so busy and she wandered a little farther
before finally asking someone where she should go. So following
several peoples' advice she made her way toward where they told her the
Headwoman would be.
Fortunately, the two of them found each other. "So, you seem lost. That
means you're probably the girl I'm looking for. Is that so?" Qorri pulled back,
allowing some of the Weyrfolk to pass.
Pierka moved in the same direction as the other woman. "I think so ma'am,"
she said.
"My name is Qorri. I'm Headwoman here. And you are?" She grabbed Pierka's
arm softly, leading her to a place where they could talk.
"I'm Pierka ma'am," she said bobbing a small curtsey.
"Where are you from then?" As a girl, she would be in the minority. Usually
they didn't get many girls unless there was a gold egg except for the Weyrbred
children.
"Just now I came from Dolphin Hall. I was apprenticed there but, well
I kept coming up here to watch the dragons." She shrugged.
"And you have your token?" Qorri asked automatically. It wasn't hard to verify
the tokens.
"Yes ma'am," she said and dug into her pocket to pull out the little
wooden token the bluerider had given her.
Qorri took it, checking the names carved into it. Her fingers felt along the
grooves. Satisfied, she nodded. "Very well, so you do want to be a candidate
then?"
Her eyes burned with her answer but she answered with a simple "Yes."
"All right follow me..." She led her through the tunnels towards the barracks
and the storerooms within. "Anything special I need to know about?"
"I don't have a lot of memories before 2 turns ago," she said. "But I
can learn right well and I know my harper lessons." She followed the
woman smartly trotting when she had to to keep up.
"What do you mean no memory...why?" Qorri frowned, wondering if that
could make her ineligible to Stand. She'd have to ask the healer. **What if
the girl's brain doesn't work right?**
"I don't know what happened but they tell me the boat I washed up in
had been run aground during a big storm. They think my parents were
seacrafters but can't be real sure." She knew she had to tell them
because they always found out. "I don't remember learning but I can
read and write and do my numbers."
"But you remember everything now?" Her thoughts were going through
their paces, considering the possibilities.
"Yes," she said "I can remember everything for the last couple of
turns and learn the same as everyone learns. " Serious blue eyes met the
Headwoman's unflinchingly.
"I'm going to go ahead and give you a place to sleep, but we will need
for you to see a healer to make sure that everything is doing as it should.
Do you understand?" Qorri would take no chances.
"Yes ma'am," she answered with a small nod of her head. By now she
knew the drill. They had to confirm that she could function. But still it
was better done up front than if they found out later and suspected her
of withholding anything.
They entered the barracks and Qorri led her to an empty cot. "Here's your
cot for now. There's a footlocker for storage and a chest of drawers for
your clothes. You'll find bedfurs and rudimentary supplies. There's a set
of knots and some uniforms in the wardrobe. If they need be altered, please
do so. If you require a different size altogether, let us know."
"There's a board in the common area with a list of rules, including curfew.
You'll also find the updated chore assignments and duties list everyday on
that board. If you have any questions, see the weyrlingstaff or myself. You've
been in the Weyr so you know your way around. Feel free to explore the barracks
until midday meal. You'll take that in the dining cavern, then be directed as
to your next activity. Any questions?" Her eyes watched Pierka, wondering how
this one would turn out.
She listened carefully knowing she would be watched. She looked at the
footlocker, chest and wardrobe then back at the Headwoman. Just this
small space was more than she'd had for herself that she could
remember. Her few belongings would rattle around in the chest. "I
can't think of any right now. Thank you ma'am." She wasn't quite sure
of all the niceties in the Weyr so she bobbed a small curtsy as she
would have done to the Headwoman at the Hall.
"Except... " She turned and popped her little pack into the
footlocker. Then scrubbed her palms on the front of her tunic. "Can
you point me to the privy?"
"Go that way, left, and it's a ways down on the right." She pointed, knowing it
was well marked by signs so Pierka would have a hard time missing it.
"Thanks," she said trying not hop from one foot to the other with her
need to run in the direction the Headwoman had pointed her. Then she
realized she couldn't wait any longer and bolted.
Qorri smiled to herself, wondering what her own children might have like
had she ever had them. She would notify the healers and the weyrlingmaster
about this one.
