Idly Sh'del flicked a hand at Trouble, as she tried to ruffle through
the papers laid before him. At a half-hearted growl from her owner,
the green fire lizard stopped her disruptions and flew over to the
other person in the room. It was just as well, Sh'del thought,
looking at the lists of Candidates' names before him. One popped out
and he glanced up at the headwoman.
"This boy," and he pointed at Taeshin's name, "what do you think?" He
had heard all sorts of rumors and gossip about the boy but wanted to
know what Qorri thought..
She bent over to see what name he was talking about. "Ahhh Taeshin.
That one-he was a bit confused, but I think we have him straightened
out. Janani has the final word, but I think he'll be fine."
"What was his issue?" He kept one eye on her as he ruffled through
the papers, looking for any other potential troublemakers.
"He kept standing and never impressed. He saw his friends become
weyrlings and a little bit of jealousy struck." She frowned, remembering.
"Ahh.." That was in keeping with what Meledei said. Frowning in
thought, he asked, "So what is your opinion on the whole thing? He
looking like a sour sort?"
"I think he's an adolescent boy. Boys get their pride hurt and they do
funny things when those hormones are raging. We've had a chat and he's
done his extra duties. I'm inclined to say he'll be alright. And anyway, he's
a dragonhealer so it'll be useful for him to impress." Qorri thought Taeshin
would settle down.
"True..." the man half muttered, already looking down the list to
other ones. If he was fine with Qorri, he was fine with him. "Anyone
else that may be trouble?"
"Not trouble necessarily but...that Tanom has been hanging around our
junior goldrider a bit much. If he doesn't impress bronze..." Qorri still
hoped Z'ku would get in there.
Sh'del looked up at her and raised an eyebrow before chuckling. "Good
lad, get in there before that rich boy does." He trusted Meledei to
make up her own mind, about her love life. He ruffled the papers,
asking, "Anyone else?"
"A new one-a girl. She came in with no memory of the past. I sent her to
the healers, which you would have gotten those reports?" Qorri waited to
let him look.
"Yeah...these ones...they said she was okay...?" He'd make sure to
call her down soon. That sounded more serious than a brat of a
boy and some lucky sod sniffing around Meledei. "I'd like to meet her
though before the Hatching..what do you think?"
"You're more than welcome if you want to. The healers said she was
fine. Her current memory is there and it hasn't effected her faculties.
The amnesia is probably due to a traumatic event and it could return
anytime." She shrugged, not really understanding that sort of thing.
"Okay..." He flicked a hand at Trouble, who had come over to chew on
the edge of the papers. "Stop that, you." He put the papers on the
edge of the desk and looked at Qorri. "What do you make of the new
Weyrwoman? She seem a fair sort?"
"On the one hand, she came into a hard situation. She handled it well,
I believe. She's doing her best to get things done around here. There are
still things she will have to learn, but I'll give her time for that. Did I like
the fact that Traelyn didn't bother me? Sure. I think the Weyrleader needs
someone that will talk back to him though." Qorri knew that Traelyn's
running off had hurt N'vanik.
"So..in other words, she's in your business then?" Sh'del teased,
giving Qorri a devious look.
"Eh, not as much as she could be and for that I'm thankful. Who knows,
though? As time passes, perhaps she'll get more curious." She frowned,
seriously hoping that didn't happen. She had too many underfoot to be
babysitting a fully grown goldrider.
"Maybe I can give her a few well placed 'hints' so she comes around
you more often." His blue eyes had a mischievous glint to them.
"Maybe that would give some of our young boys a breather from you."
"Now you see here. I've got plenty reasons to set her on your tail."
Qorri puffed up, though she knew he was teasing. "And anyway, I'm
careful not to..overtax anyone."
At that the man laughed. "I'm sure you do. She'll be on my tail soon
enough, don't you worry." He came around the table and wrapped an arm
around the Headwoman's shoulders.
"Ah, you'd like that then, wouldn't you? The way I hear it, she's not as
holdbred as she likes to think she is. Maybe if you knocked at her weyr?"
There was a funny expression on Qorri's face. The Headwoman seemed
skeptical, but she was laughing silently at the same time.
"She may not be Hold-bound...but I am! And I'm not even from a Hold
at that." No, he'd prefer to stay as far away from the woman's bed as
he could.
Qorri shrugged. "To each his own. Was there anything else? I'd hate to
keep you from marching the little ones around in their lines. We'll be doing
robe inspections soon."
"You make it sound bad, marching them around." He reached out and
gave her a cheeky kiss on the forehead. "No, nothing else. I'll make
sure we get them good and tired before you do the robe inspection."
She smiled and nodded. "They better not be filthy though. You have them
bathe before I get them."
"I'll have them roll in the mud, for good measure!"
"Out with you then!" She mocked, mimicking a boot heel to his rear.
