Description: Xorian Impresses and it's not quite what he expected...or
more like who he thought he was.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 18 of Turn 6
Xorian entered the Hatching sands in a line with the other candidates. His
robe was pristine and white. He craned his neck, looking at the stands,
trying to spot familiar faces. Were his parents here? Had they been able
to come? There was just too many people to pick up two faces from the sea
of spectators.
He took his place in a semicircle around the eggs. They were already
rocking. The humming of the dragons filled the air and it intensified when
first egg cracked. Xorian smiled fondly at the little green when she
picked up her lifemate. Those hatchlings were so cute.
Next hatchling to break out of his egg was bronze and Xorian felt sudden
nervousness. His stomach was fully of fluttering butterflies. But he
didn't even a spare a glance towards the young healer and instead stumbled
to someone else. Xorian felt a twinge of disappointment.
Then egg after egg started to hatch and Xorian couldn't follow who
Impressed. He tried to catch the attention of brown or bronze hatchlings.
But none of them even turned to look at him. He started to get worried and
truly nervous now.
When the girl was injured by the clumsy hatchling, Xorian wanted to go to
check her, if she needed help. He was first and foremost a healer. But
the Weyrlingsmaster's staff had matters well in hand and he was not
needed. He stayed put.
And then the number of unhatched eggs had suddenly dwindled to a mere
handful and the sands were getting empty when pair after pair left it.
Xorian was starting to wonder if he was going to Impress at all. Perhaps
he would be one of those who would be left standing alone.
This was his first try after all, and sometimes it took Turns before your
lifemate found you.
A dragonet tumbled out from the last egg. He took a moment to straighten
himself up. He was blue, very blue. Even covered by the slime from the
egg, his hide shone bright cobalt blue. Moving with determination he
walked straight to the healer-candidate. }: You won't be left alone, I am
here :{ he said.
"Camyth! But you're blue?" X'ian, for that was his name now, nearly
dropped a jaw.
}: Very blue and very, very hungry! :{
X'ian could feel his hunger in his own guts and placing an arm around the
hatchlings neck, guided him towards the entrance where meat was waiting
for them. But his mind was twirling. A blue. He was a bluerider now. He
had been awake during the candidate classes, he knew what it meant. **But
I love Kaitien!** his mind cried. **Oh, come now face it. You never given
a man an admiring look? And what about that crush you had on that
red-haired journeyman who gave lessons in Pediatrics when you were
apprentice?** another part of his mind chided. **Don't deny it. Yes, you
love her, but you could as easily love Falland too, her ex-suitor. Who is
very handsome. That's why you hated him so much.**
He had impressed, he should be happy, this should be the most joyous day
in his life. So why did he feel like he's been shattered. This was not
what he had expected from a Hatching. He was not the man he expected to
be. So, who was he?
}: I expected you. Now, give me food! :{ Camyth's demanding voice intruded
his confused mind.
One thing X'ian was sure of. The bond between them was real and
unbreakable. No matter what internal turmoil he was suffering, he _loved_
Camyth.
