X'ian gaze wandered over Camyth over and over again. He was most
beautiful blue he'd ever seen. Vibrant cobalt blue that was slightly
lighter at the belly. He was sleek like the racing runners X'ian's
uncle bred. But he was blue. X'ian had never believed he would Impress
a blue. He honestly had expected a bronze or maybe a brown. He had
been engaged! And he and Kaitien hadn't actually waited for the
marriage vow's before "consuming" their relationship. He never thought
about men that way. Or had he? There were things that his mind refused
to dwell on. He was holdbred, a relative of a Lord Holder. Such
things did not belong to his world.

}:What things? I belong to you. What's wrong with being blue? Aren't
you going to feed me? :{ Camyth interupted his reverie and butted
X'ian's leg impatiently.

"Oh, sorry Camyth!" X'ian hastily returned to handing meat
it out for the little blue.

}:Camyth's is having problems:{ Loranth relayed to his lifemate,
overhearing the blue's comments. Sh'del knew enough to know exactly
what that meant. Quickly he got over to the confused looking lad, an
easy thing for him to do, since his imposing size meant that more than
one person was happy to jump out of his path. "Boy, he's gotta eat,"
he said as he got to the dark young man. "Worry later, feed him now."

"Yes, sir," X'ian said meekly. He tossed another handful of meat to
Camyth's waiting jaw. "But he's blue," he
murmured.

}: He's really stuck to that * but he's blue* thought, :{ Camyth
complained to Loranth.

"Of course he's blue. What, were you expecting a gold?" Not for the
umteeth time did Sh'del want to punch a wall, or something, when he
thought about repressive Holder values. How many boys came out of
those Sands completely baffled and depressed, just because they had no
clue who they were?

Loranth came over to nuzzle the tiny hatchling. }:Don't worry, it'll
be okay. You're a lovely blue, don't you worry.:{

"No, a bronze," X'ian replied and blushed. Now that he voiced it, it
sounded so arrogant.

At that, Sh'del snorted and did tap on the table rather forceably.
"You would have been better off with a gold, if that's the attitude
you want to take." He wanted to yell at the kid right there and then,
but took another breath and stared off into the crowd for a moment,
trying to get his temper under control. How many snotty little Holder
boys showed up wanting that very thing? And then it occured to him
that X'ian might not be the only one he would be having this talk
with. No wonder the old 2nd had retired.

Maybe giving X'ain here the facts would straighten him out, a bit.
"Okay boy, out of 40 or so eggs, only a few--a very small few--will be
bronzes. Look around, there's only a handful out of this clutch, and
this was a massive one. So why the bloody shards would you think you
had one coming? Every bloody dragon--EVERY one--is important. In
fact, all those green ones you Holders like to look down your long
noses at, d'you know they're the most important of all? And your
blue...your lovely little blue here..is every bit as important as any
bronze."

At that Loranth hummed at the hatchling and told him,
}:you're_more_important than any bronze.:{

}: I know that, :{ Camyth said and fanned his small wings. He had a
solid self-confidence.

"Yes, sir," X'ian said, his cheeks burning scarlet with the embarrasement.

"Don't give me some meek 'yes sir.' Why does having a blue upset you?
I'd be pleased as punch if this blue was mine. Look around, he's one
of the prettiest ones here." Sh'del nodded at little Camyth, still
trying to get over the urge of beating this boy senseless. Did he
know what sort of negative feelings he might be projecting towards his
tiny lifemate?

"Because it means I don't know who I am any longer. I had it all
figured out. A lovely wife, career as a surgeon. Now, it's all gone
and I don't know who I am," X'ian's voice was filled with genuine
anguish. His self-image was shattered. He had had enough mindhealing
classes to know that he should just pick up all the pieces and build
himself a new one. But that would take time.

}: You're mine, that's who you are, :{ Camyth crooned confortingly and
butted his leg again.

"Well then, if you felt that way, why did you agree to Stand then?"
**Give me the strengh, Loranth, not to beat this boy sensless**

"Because that is your duty if dragons pick you up," X'ian said. "The
dragons protect us, we owe them that," he continued, realising
something. No matter what Camyth's colour was, he did have a duty to
protect and care the little hatchling.

"So then why do you feel the need to insult this lovely fellow here by
being upset because he's not bronze?"

"I'm sorry," X'ian gave Camyth a contrite look.

}: I not insulted. I am hungry however. I'll take a bite out of your
arse if you don't feed me, :{ Camyth threatened.

X'ian had to chuckle at that and toss yet another handful for the waiting
jaw.

Loranth told Sh'del what the blue said and the man laughed at that.
"At least one of you has sense," he muttered. "Tell you what, get
that little one to sleep and we'll talk, a real long talk about all
your fears and what not. How does that sound?"

"Sounds like a good plan, sir," X'ian said. If he only concentrated to
Camyth, things seemed much brighter, less confusing.

"Good." Sh'del clapped the boy on his back.

X'ian looked over Sh'del's shoulder and groaned. His parents were
coming. His father looked happy and jubilant, although he was giving
warning glances towards his wife. His mother, however... whole her
face and her body language spoke about disappointment. He could almost
hear it: " a Lord Holder's grand-nephew does not Impress a blue!"

When the boy groaned and stiffened, Sh'del looked over his shoulder to
the couple bearing down on them. From their knots, he figured they
were this kid's parents. This could get...interresting.

"Xor! Congratulations!" Thorien's face broke into a grin and he pulled
X'ian into a bear hug. His mother Xolene stayed in the background and
crossed her arms under her brests.
"It's X'ian now, dad."

Sh'del blew out the breath he found he was holding. At least the
father seemed happy enough. Disappointed mothers usually came around
but disappointed fathers...how they were another story.
