The hatching was over and everyone had left. Qorri was breathing a
sigh of relief. Now that she had time, she knew she had to meet with
the new arrival, who was of particular interest to her. The woman was
a bit hawkish for her tastes, though she could recognize good traits
in her. Still, Qorri preferred a different type of woman for her
assistants. **I know just what to do with her** she thought as she
waited in her office.
Jylanya asked for directions to find the Headwoman's office. She got
turned around a couple of times in the twisting corridors of the huge
Weyr. She was grateful they had taken her in and had pitched in during
the recent hatching. She'd even avoided detection by her brother who
was there by way of representing his hold. Ultimately she would find
her way and she knew that, but she didn't really think the Weyr was
for her.
She arrived at the office door and smoothed the apron over the front
of her dress. Then patting her hair to make sure it was all in place
she fixed a smile on her face and knocked.
"Come in," came Qorri's easy tone.
Jylanya entered the office and crossed to one of the available chairs.
She nodded and sat on the edge of the chair with her hands folded.
"Thank you for taking time to see me."
"Not a problem. I see all of the new arrivals who aren't riders at one
point or another. So how are things going? I know you were assigned
temporary duties and quarters for the time being." Qorri opened up the
conversation, trying to get her comfortable before she started to lead
her.
"Yes, they did and thank you." She had been made welcome and
comfortable, even more so than she had been in her own home the past
few months since her husband's passing. "I have helped in several areas
during the recent festivities."
"And what do you think of the Weyr so far? I know it can be hard for some
holders to make the transition." She watched her face carefully, looking for
any signs.
She smiled a little. "It _is_ a bit of a culture shock," she said. "I
guess I've been a little sheltered in the small holds I've lived in.
The only knowledge of the Weyrs was Harper taught or over our heads at
a distance."
"Do you think you can see yourself staying here then?" It was said with concern.
The headwoman certainly only wanted what was best for her.
She shook her head. It would be a difficult adjustment. Then she
shrugged, "I don't really have anywhere else to go."
"But if you did, Jylanya?" Qorri asked it, intimating there was another option.
Jylanya wasn't slow by any stretch. She might have been relegated to
the work of a drudge by her family in the past but that was their
oversight. Her eyes brightened at the Headwoman's question. "You have
a suggestion?"
"Aye, the dolphin hall has come under a new Master. He needs a Headwoman
to assist him in his endeavors. You would still be here, but not...in the Weyr
proper. Of course you would reach out to me when you needed assistance,
but the crafters and their folk would be your concern." She watched her reaction
carefully, waiting to see if she would jump on it.
**Interesting** It wasn't in the Weyr but nearby and probably more of
a setting she would be comfortable with. It really did interest her
and she sat forward in her chair a little. "How far is Dolphin Hall?"
She wasn't quite sure she really wanted another dragon ride.
"Oh dear, you can walk." Qorri stood up and brushed her skirts. "If you want,
I can take you and we can introduce you to the hallmaster. If you
don't like him,
I can find a place for you."
"Thank you so much Qorri," she was truly amazed at the woman's
willingness to help her. "I believe I would like to meet the
Hallmaster and see if we would work well together." If there was one
thing she was not afraid of, it was work. "I _do_appreciate your
help."
"Not a problem. I'll see when he's free and let you know." She didn't like to
just drop in on Famell since there was that bit about craft autonomy and all
that.
