N'vanik

N'vanik

Loseth was a very proud papa and N'vanik was a very proud rider. He
made time to say a few words to each of the new weyrlings (which had
the added bonus of putting off talking to the visiting holders). He
finished talking with a greenrider and turned to the next weyrling,
the one who had Impressed the last blue. He wasn't good with rider
names, and Loseth was even worse, so he went with the hatchling's name
instead. "So, this is Camyth." He admired the little blue.

"Yes, he is," X'ian replied, letting his hand rest on Camyth's neck ridge.

"Loseth tells me you're a healer," N'vanik said.

"Yes, sir, a junior journeyman. I walked the tables around a Turn
ago," X'ian answered.

"You'll be an extra asset to the Weyr, then. You were Searched?"
N'vanik was much better with faces than names, and he'd only seen
X'ian recently.

"Yes, I was," X'ian confirmed.

"Ah." N'vanik nodded thoughtfully. "Were you expecting a blue?"

"No, I have no idea," he gave a rueful smile. "I had a girl back in a
hold. We are engaged, well.. were. This pretty much put an end to
that," X'ian continued with a touch of sadness. He loved her.

"Well, you can still weyrmate, if she's willing to move here. And if
she can handle the idea that you like males to some degree."

X'ian wasn't so sure he could handle liking males himself. That
thought he kept for himself.
"Yes, we can weyrmate but that has to wait untill the
weyrling-training is over," X'ian agreed. "So, no one here would
object if I brought her here?" he checked.

N'vanik shrugged. "That's between you and her. Though after you become
a Senior Weyrling, like you said."

X'ian nodded. Her father wouldn't like it.

"Which Hold are you from?" N'vanik didn't like small talk much, but it
was easier with new weyrlings. He was actually interested in where
they came from and who their friends and family were.

"Lazur Lake originally," X'ian said. "The past Turn I was assigned to
seahold near Topaz Sea and there I was Searched," he continued.

"And that's where you met your lady love?"

"Yes," X'ian smiled fondly, "She's the steward's daughter."

N'vanik lifted an eyebrow. "You think he'll be okay with you bringing
her to the Weyr?"

"Probably not," X'ian frowned.

"Bring her anyway," N'vanik said with a wink.

"She would love that," X'ian said with a chuckle.

"It would be romantic, carrying her off to the Weyr." Just like those
harper romances he caught Tal reading.

"She likes romantic stuff," X'ian said remembering times when he had
made her happy bringing her flowers or with other small romantic
gestures.

N'vanik laughed. "And what's more romantic than your dragonrider lover
carrying you off to the Weyr to live happily ever after?"

"Nothing," the weyrling grinned. Of course, she was expecting a
bronze. But being a hold girl, she probably didn't realize the main
difference between bronze- and bluerider, and Camyth was very handsome
blue. He better write her a letter though, and warn her beforehand.

N'vanik patted his shoulder. "Well, congratulations again, and good
luck with your lady. I have a lot of other weyrlings to talk to."

"Thank you, sir," X'ian replied with a grin.
