N'vanik

N'vanik

Despite the fact that a drudge could do it, Qorri took special pleasure
in the chore. Walking into the Weyrleader's office, she hummed and
set the tray down. Arranging the klah and the bread, wherry eggs, and
meat just so, she stood back and set down the water and the juice.
She wouldn't have him missing breakfast. Satisfied, she turned to go
and found out she was caught.

"Qorri," he said. N'vanik was functional, but he wasn't really awake
yet. His nose and his stomach had to tag team his brain to get it to
realize what was going on. "You brought me breakfast."

"Aye I did. Now eat it." She didn't want to give him time to realize that
she was the one that brought him breakfast every morning. She didn't
fuss over any man like _that_. At least she didn't want anyone to think
she did.

"Thanks." He moved toward his desk. "You didn't have to bring it yourself,
though."

"It's the day after a hatching. Everyone else is sleeping their night off.
While I am here making the sure the Weyr doesn't fall down." She snorted,
pouring the sweetener and everything into his klah the way he liked it.

"And _I_ was all set to be cranky at being up this early after a
Hatching, but it's harder to do when I'm having breakfast served to
me." He sat and stifled a yawn.

When she was done, she stepped back and watched him for a bit. "Wish
someone would do this for me every now and again. Ah well."

He arched an eyebrow. "Don't look at me."

"Meh, you'd burn the eggs." She shrugged, wishing not for the first time
that her female fosterlings would take up the duty. Perhaps she would
assign it.

"You could just make someone do it." He blew on his klah.

"Yeah but it's not as much fun as knowing someone wanted to do it for you."
Surely he knew that after leading the Weyr for a turn and more.

"Maybe you could find yourself a man more your age. He's more likely
to think of things like that than the boys you like so much," he teased.

"I did that, remember? He died." One of her brows came up.

N'vanik leaned back a little, mug in hand. "Is that why you go for younger
men?"

"Maybe. And they can go for longer. And generally, they do what I tell them."
That was Qorri's way. She liked being in control after so many turns of
following a man around.

N'vanik laughed. "You are good at bossing people around."

"It's better when all you have to do is plant the idea and then they think it's
their idea and they go off to do it." Her eyes met his, thinking if it
was different
with riders.

He arched an eyebrow. "Does that actually work on drudges scrubbing floors?"

"Sometimes. The simpler ones can only be told." She shrugged, thinking of one
such example.

"You convince the drudges they want to be scrubbing the floor? How
does that work?" He set his mug down and dug into his food.

"Not exactly. So every morning I get up there and ask everyone what would they
like for their assignments. Naturally no one really wants to scrub the floors,
amongst other things, but I usually know which ones will be better at it than
others. So then, I let the point drop that whoever chooses that task won't have
another for the rest of the day. The next thing you know, I get the volunteers I
wanted." She nodded carefully. "Though sometimes you can manipulate things
a bit easier than that."

"Huh," he said thoughtfully as he chewed. "I give orders, but I try to
be as fair
as possible and I try to make everyone understand why the work has to be done."

"Well, you have more duty and all that and orders are to be expected. Me, I
could give orders but they seem to take it better when it's more of...well
not straight barking at them. If they think they have the choice, it goes over
better." She shrugged, knowing that wasn't true, but it appeared that way.

"Riders don't have much choice. 'Dragonmen must fly' and all that. But
that doesn't mean I have to be strict. I hate people that let
leadership go to their heads and treat everyone else like dung." He
took another bite.

"I'm going to leave you to your breakfast. I've got people to wrangle. Now that
the hatching's over, we need to get all the visitors home and the beds clean."
She headed out of his office, muttering something about filthy crafters.

N'vanik chuckled and turned his focus to the meal in front of him. He
was glad Qorri had taken the Headwoman job. Not only did she do her
job well, but she was easy to talk to.
