Turns Tick

Characters: Qorri
Description: Another birthingday for the Headwoman.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 8 of Turn 6

She had put in her normal morning, then given it up for her restday. Qorri had disappeared to go walking along the beach. She was getting older and there were still no children. At one time, it upset her. Now, she calmly accepted it. She had her fosterlings.

"Well, at least I have a Weyr now. I have a good place to sleep and clothes to wear and will never starve." She could enjoy herself with the young men as she wished. They certainly didn't bother about how old she was just yet. "Someday I'll be wrinkly and think about now. It is a good life for me. Maybe not at the beginning, but now I enjoy my work and my people."

Her toes made a trail in the sand. Qorri looked out at the water. Threadfall was the only thing she didn't like about the Weyr. It was so close and they lost so many riders. She was the one who cleaned out their weyrs and made them ready. She was the one who kept their things. The guardian of the Weyr's lost, she alone counted the boots, the jackets, the harnesses. Sometimes, they were reused by others.

Walking into the water, she let the waves come up around her, absorbing the soothing rhythm of it. "So nice and so cool. I wish I could just stay out here all day." The sun warmed her skin and she laid back. Her hair snaked out in all directions, like an inkblot. "They better have my favorite bread tonight."

It was a candlemark or so before she walked back. A solitary figure, Qorri plodded along. Coming back into the Weyr, she stopped to watch the bustle and the people coming back and forth. The dragons flew overhead. "Another day, another turn, another Pass. Qorri, there's lots to do."

Smiling, the Headwoman walked back to her quarters to bathe and make ready for dinner. She would not be on staff tonight, taking her dinner with the rest instead of later with Cook. Qorri had hidden some pudding for herself, though, just for her.
