Description: Sh'del confronts Qorri over a candidate that left
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 6 of Turn 6
She was finishing up her daily routine, heading to her quarters when
she heard boots walking behind her. Qorri ignored it for awhile, then
as she turned a corner, she slid back into the shadows beyond the
glows to see just who it was.
"Nice try Qorri, but I know all your tricks." Sh'del stopped and
looked at her, even though he couldn't actually see her face, with the
glows shinning in his eyes.
"Why are you following me in the tunnels, of all people?" she frowned,
coming forward. She was tired and wanted to rest before eating.
"Is that of all people why are_you_following me? Or is it why, of all
people are you following_me_?" He raised an eyebrow and watched her,
as his green flit curled up on his shoulder and did the same.
"Well since my day is over and I am going to rest, you can pick which one."
She turned to go, heading back down the tunnel. Qorri was tired.
At that Trouble squawked and flew over to Qorri, landing on her shoulder.
She wasn't exactly friendly with flits, but she was so tired she didn't bother
messing with this one. "I'm not feeding you if that's what you're looking for."
Sh'del reached out to gather her off Qorri. "No, she's probably as
annoyed with you as I am. Why'd you go after a candidate?"
"Why did I what?" Turning, she looked at him, not quite understanding what
he was saying.
"You know the one. Turn's Year's eve, that ring a bell?" Usually he
stayed far out of her business with younger boys, but when it affected
one under his charge...
"No, it doesn't. That was the hurricane. I was working nonstop." She looked
very confused, trying to figure out where he was getting at.
He blinked at her for a moment, confused from the lack of sleep. Then
he remembered, it wasn't the hurricane, it was Jyramikah's hatching
and he told her so. "The boy who turned in his candidate knots the
very next day so he could spend some time with you, ring a bell now?"
"Aye I do. He gave me his resignation, then turned in his knots the next
day. He decided to craft fulltime. Too old anyway really." She shrugged.
"And in this day and age, with thread falling, you didn't find
that...I dunno..just a tad stupid?" He ground his teeth in
frustration. How could she allow this to happen when they needed all
the candidates they could get? And that boy had seemed promising.
"No. If the boy didn't want to Stand, he didn't want to Stand. He'd done it
already for turns and never came back with a dragon. So he decided not to
do it the one hatching he had left. Obviously he wasn't meant to impress
since a dragonet didn't find him anyway. You can't force people to be on
the Sands. You saw what happened at River Bluff." Sure the weyrlingstaff
were in charge of the candidates, but so was Qorri and she had been dealing
with them longer than Sh'del had.
At that the man turned away, gritting his teeth. It was that or hit her, and
he had never hit a woman in all his turns and wasn't about to start now.
Though she needed telling off.
