Meledei had barely any time to really think. The sun was peeking over
the horizon and the grey of the morning still hung in the air. She
stood up and stretched and that was when it hit here - the sudden wave
of desire, of need, of thirst and a sort of hunger. It sent her
reeling. She knew it would be potent, when Elleth finally rise, but
now that it had finally come, it fairly knocked her breathless. The
gold had been glowing for several days - far longer than the creature
really ought to have, and Meledei had wondered if she would ever rise.
And yet, there she was, launching from her ledge and swiftly angling
down to the pens where she immediately pounced upon a herdbeast.

Elleth didn't seem to need urging to simply blood. In truth, that was
all the dragon wanted and so Meledei's thoughts went without coming to
fruition as she hurried through the hallways. She thrown on a tunic
and trousers but hadn't bothered with shoes - they would take far too
long.

The early morning was dotteed with grey clouds that threatened rain.
The chill was ignored as the young woman sped over the bowl to where
already men were gathering and some male dragons were hovering and
watching, waiting.

The calls of the dragons made it immediately obvious what was
happening. Not to mention he could feel the sense of anticipation in
the air. Even as Naath gathered with the other bronze and brown males
around the glowing gold, I'lan took his place with the other men,
eyeing Meledei with interest.

R'enh woke with a gasp sitting straight up in bed. The intensity of
the spike of desire that hit him told him this was a gold flight.
"Elleth!" He leaped out of his bed and threw on trousers before
trotting off toward the gathering. Mnoranth's eyes whirled with desire
as he blooded his own kill never taking them off the shining gold.
Meledei was already surrounded. He just joined the group with a nod to
the other riders.

Sh'del sighed once more as he watched R'enh join the crowd around the
young goldrider. He never thought he'd actually think he would rather
be going over notes with E'ril about the weyrlings but when Loranth
announced that he too would chase, the brownrider felt rather sick to
his stomach. Meledei was like a kid sister to him, not like a
potential lover. He scrubbed his face, feeling low, and looked away
from the small gold.

Z'ku's heart hammered in his chest as he joined the riders. All but a
few were older and more experienced than he and Xemroth. Did he truly
have a chance of winning against such competition? Xemroth assured him
that yes, they did. The young bronzerider fixed his eyes on Meledei.
She was even more beautiful than usual and he swallowed against the
rising lust.

K'deren knew, gold flights were special for both him and Donneth as they
arrived, joining the throng gathering in the bowl. Donneth could do
this, he had done it in the past and that thought echoed around the
Wingsecond's head, even as he realised that the young goldrider was
barely older than Rondera.

N'mor was breathing heavily when he joined the men around Meledei. He
had ran all the way. He looked Meledei with admiration. This was flight
he had expected! He gave Kedvencth a nervous glance. The young bronze
looked handsome in his eyes, dark bronze hide shining. He was also
bigger than the average. But did he have any chances? This was only
their second gold flight and the bronze was only two turns old. He had
only won flight a once, a green flight. N'mor pushed disturbing
thoughts aside. **Think only Meledei and Ellenth, only winning!**

As Naath got into events, so did I'lan. He could see the other riders
around him getting into the moment, and that dragged him along. The
bronze could see only gold, his rider only Meledei.

Mnoranth's hunger for the small golden beauty was mirrored in R'enh's
for Meledei. Though normally the man would have thought of her almost
as a little sister, today was different. Today she was the prize and
to his eyes everything desirable. He stepped closer and shoulder to
shoulder with the other riders encircling her.

Meledei inhaled in a deep gasp as Elleth roared out, the sound high and
it echoed through the air. The gold leaped up and the woman had to
restrain herself from doing the same. Her hands clenched and she drew
them down to her sides, but her eyes turned upward, the orbs taking on
a more distant hue as the chase began in earnest.

Kedvencth's answering call echoed in N'mor's ears. He almost called
out himself too. The line between dragon and rider was blurring. Ked's
lust filled his body, making it burn. Or was it his own lust?

R'enh launched after her bright gold hide. His being blended fully
with Mnoranth as his own consciousness became his lifemate. Gold
flights were an entirely different experience from green.. He could
feel the strength of his wings as he beat after the prize jockeying
for an advantage in the chase. The intensity gripped him and he
involuntarily reached forward toward Meledei

Z'ku felt his sense of self slipping as Xemroth joined the others in
the sky. The dim part that was left of him took a step closer to
Meledei. He wanted her. He'd always wanted her, but not as much as he
did now. Lust burned in him, growing hotter.

N'mor tried to follow them with his eyes, but the Flight soon was too
far to see and his eyes just started to water.

Meledei took a step back as Elleth shifted. She could sense others
around her, not just the dragons that the gold felt, but the men as
they crowded around. They were already reaching for her, but Meledei
wriggled out of her grasp. Elleth was no where near getting caught and
she wasn't about to let one of them have her just yet. The girl's jade
eyes sparkled as the chase began in earnest. They were going to have
to win her.

K'deren's step forward matched that of Meledei as she moved back.
Donneth was soaring in the skies after the gold, and he felt like that
also, ground, other people it didn't matter as Donneth's thoughts
became his.

I'lan sidestepped around another man, even as Naath tried to pass
another rival in the air. It was his turn - he'd never be truly sure
who thought those words, man or dragon, as he tried to get closer to
Meledei.

R'enh shifted his stance and moved sideways as another rider pushed
past him and closer to Meledei. He bided his time, knowing she was
young and this was her first flight. He called to her in the sky he
could see clearly in his minds eye. She was young and beautiful and
gloried in teasing them all as they jockeyed for position around her.
She led them higher and farther and R'enh's shoulders began to feel
the echo of burning muscles in dragon wings.

Z'ku barely felt his body on the ground, most of him was in the sky
with Xemroth and they were both full of energy. Dragons shifted in the
sky as men shifted around Meledei. There were so many. Sometimes Z'ku
lost sight of Meledei as other men moved in front of him, but he kept
pushing his way through them. He would not be left behind, he would
not be outmatched.

N'mor took advantage of his small size and ducked under the joustling
elbows to the front row. He stared Meledei with intense, admiring look
in his eyes. Too bad Ked did not have same advantage. Most of the
bronzes were more experienced and the young bronze was trapped in the
middle of the group of chasers.

Meledei drew in a deep breath as Elleth twisted around and darted to
the side. She too stepped to the side, mimicing her dragon's
movements, snatching out of the grasp of an impatient bronzerider who
was reaching for her far too soon. Meledei turned toward him and
physically hissed, those green eyes flashing with a strange light.

The sound startled K'deren, he had become so intent on the flight, mind
seeing what Donneth did as he ducked around to see the young goldrider
more clearly.

** Ain't she spirited?** N'mor/Kedvencth were filled with admiration.

Sh'del could feel his stomah drop out at that. Soon--all too
soon--Meledei would know full on what it meant to ride a gold. With
that thought he let himself be shuffled back even as Loranth surged
past the tiring blues and smaller browns.

They had caught gold before and his confidence made him patient. He
didn't reach out for her too soon but stood intensely nearby waiting
for the perfect moment. Biding his time for the proper moment to
gather her to him. R'enh felt her snarl and move. Mnementh soared and
pumped harder as others tired around him.

I'lan/Naath were as one. Rider mirrored the draconic actions as I'lan
stepped closer to Meledei even as in the air Naath's wings beat faster.
Both were focused on achieving their goal, a shimmering golden prize.

A brownrider got too close and wound up with a set of scratches on his
face as Meledei reacted to Elleth's darting away, tongue lashing at the
brown. She danced to the side and almost fell into Z'ku's arms. She
turned toward him.

Males fell back, tiring, and some dropped out of the chase altogether.
Z'ku and his bronze still went after the beautiful female in front of
them, as determined as they had been when the chase began. Now he
didn't just keep his place among the other riders. Z'ku dared to reach
out, his fingers brushing against Meledei's hot skin. "Me, you want
me," he said as his dragon echoed him in the sky.

"You..." Meledei didn't get anything else. Elleth twisted once again
and fell against not against Z'ku's, but R'enh's. With a cry that
echoed her dragon, Meledei found herself writhing in his arms, her
mouth seeking his as gold and bronze came together.

Strong arms wrapped around her as tails entwined and bronze fell
triumphantly through the sky high above the ocean with captured gold.
R'enh swept up the gold's rider and carried her to privacy away from
the others. "Meledei," he ground out before he was again one with his
lifemate.

The dragon and rider separeted, disappointment stinging in their
hearts. N'mor watched someone else take away his goldrider and Ked's
frustrated trumpet was like from his own heart.

Bitter frustration and disappointment raged through Z'ku. He turned
away from the sight of Meledei with another man. Someone came up to
him, a warm body, a pretty face. It didn't matter who it was. All he
wanted was some relief, some kind of distraction from the hurt clawing
at him.
