E'ron was nervous. He was so nervous his hands we're trembling. He
stood outside Pierka's weyr for several minutes before he has the
nerve to knock on the door.
Pierka had called her friend Daishii to help her get ready and though
she rolled her eyes at some of her friends suggestions she was more
'made up' than her normal tom boy appearance. Her lids were lightly
shadowed and her skin had been rubbed with a light fragrant oil but
that was about all she'd let her friend do beyond arranging her hair
in a simple style.
But all of that had been done long before E'ron was due so she was
pacing in her tiny weyr until the knock finally came. Much as she
wanted to yank the door open she counted to five first. Then she
opened the door with a smile. "E'ron," her fingers clutched the bottom
of her tunic in an effort to dry her damp palms. She stepped out of
the door. "I'm all ready to go."
E'ron was breathless at the sight of her. And speechless.
"I...you...I," he stammered. "You look...great!" More than great. He
wanted to kick himself for not having a better word to mind. "Um,
so...dining cavern!" He looked at her hand, did he dare to take it?
Pierka blushed at the compliment not quite certain what to do or say.
No one had _ever_ said anything to her like that before. "Yes the
dining cavern," she murmured.
"Good. Um, well let's go then." he smiled nervously and then decided
to be brave- he offered her his hand.
She smiled and slipped her hand into his resolving to follow where he
led. They went through the halls far faster than she thought possible
and soon they were seated together in a corner of the dining hall.
"So, what would the lady like to eat this evening?" he asked. Of
course the choices were limited, but he'd get her anything she wanted,
even if he had to wrangle it somehow!
She'd never been treated quite this way nor called a lady. She smiled
shyly up at the blurider. "Maybe a nice steak and some tubers?"
"Coming right up," But first he found a table to one side and pulled
the chair out for her. Then he gave her a grin and disappeared,
returning a few minutes later with a tray holding 2 plates, 2 steaks,
tubers and 2 cups of juice. He'd chosen juice because wine for a
weyrling might be a bad idea and intoxicated women (and men) weren't
attractive!
"There you go my lady," he placed plates and cups in front if her and
then himself before slipping into a chair close to her.
She leaned over the plate he slid in front of her and took a big
appreciative whiff. "Mmm, smells wonderful," complimenting his choice
as if he'd cooked the meal himself. "Thank you." She picked up her
knife and fork and sliced into the juicy steak. He was being so very
nice to her and it felt wonderful. Other than Liddith she'd never felt
like the center of someones attention before. Well, at least that she
could remember.
"Your welcome. I made sure you got the best pieces, I hoped they're
cooked well enough...?" Not that he had control over such things, but
he wanted everything to be just right.
"They're great." Impulsively Pierka reached out and touched his hand.
"I'm so glad I met you today E'ron." She left her fingers there for a
moment before she reached again for her fork.
"I'm glad you did too!" he said, "I was feeling a bit down and now..."
he grinned. His expression spoke volumes about his mood now.
Pierka was caught by the look in his eyes. Eyes that were so intense
in his handsome face. Her heart beat a little flutter in her chest.
This was so very nice she just wanted the evening to keep going. Her
smile brightened to realize she could effect the mood of another
person just the way he did hers. She picked up and sipped her juice
while she tried to think of what to say next.
"So, do you have a craft too?"
He shook his head. "I was Holdbred and I went straight from that to
this. I had thought to maybe going into woodcrafting but," he
shrugged. "who has spare time these days?"
"Well, yes there is that," she said, slightly embarrassed by her
question. She knew she couldn't possibly practice either of the crafts
she knew anything about while riding a fighting dragon.
"I suppose we do get some time for, maybe not a craft. A hobby maybe?
Do you have one?" He sliced a piece off his meat and popped it into
his mouth.
"Well, I can't exactly work with dolphins or sail a boat now I'm with
Liddith. I couldn't even begin to think of what I might like to pick
up as a hobby." She thought a moment about what she'd been doing
around the Weyr since she'd arrived. "I did like working with leather
to make my straps."
"Well there you go then. There must be all sorts of things you can
make with it apart from straps. Like, um..." he made a face. He
couldn't think of anything off the top of his head.
"I'm sure the crafters can teach me." She smiled softly. "Oh look,"
she said as one of the cooks brought out a fresh tray of bubblies.
Pierka touched his arm and pointed.
"Oh. You like bubblies?" he grinned. "Should I get you one before they go cold?"
"Would you," she asked hopefully watching as heads turned elsewhere in
the room and people began to move toward the wonderful treats.
"I'll be back before you can blink," he got to his feet and darted
off. He wove through chairs and people and arrived at the bubbles with
only two people in front of him. He was quickly back with two bubblies
burning the palms of his hands.
She watched him move through the crowd with no small admiration. Oh
yeah she was _very_ interested in getting to know him better. "Thank
you," she said pulling a hot pie onto her plate.
"You're welcome." He put his down, slid into his chair and blew on his
palms to cool them. "Right out of the oven!"
She looked at him and just shook her head internally. She was amazed
at her good luck in finding E'ron as a new friend. She reached for his
hand and brushed the palm with her own. "If I forget to tell you
later. I had a good time tonight."
"Me too," he leaned over the table and gently kissed her lips.
