Description: Sh'del and E'ron have a chat after the hatching
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 11 of Turn 6
Sh'del sat, hoarse from talking to all the new weyrlings and their
families, and to old friends who had come to Elleth's hatching. Idely
he looked up at Loranth on one of the ledges and noted the pale blue
next to him.
}: Feykenth, his rider is sitting close to you.:{
The tall brownrider looked about him, and smiled when he caught the
eyes of the young bluerider. He hadn't seen E'ron in quite awhile.
E'ron had been watching the new eyrlings from a little further back,
watching the faces of the boys who impressed blue and green. Most
looked deleriously happy, but one or two looked pensive. No family
hovered nearby. Her wondered if they had family or if they'd been
rejected. No one with a dragon of _any_ colour should feel that way!
}:Loranth's rider is looking at you.:{, Feykenth broke through E'ron's thoughts.
E'ron glanced around and saw Sh'del. He gave a polite nod and half-smile.
Sh'del smiled and walked over to him, noting that he was glancing at
the rejected boys as he was. Clapping him on the shoulder, he asked,
"fancy being a mentor?" He nodded his head to a particularly dejected
looking lad who sat all by himself. "That one was telling all us for
sevendays how he was going to be the future Weyrleader...Impressed a
cute little green, none of his family bothered to congratulate him."
He and his staff had known from day one the boy would get a green, but
hadn't been able to get through to him.
If E'ron had made a list of a million things Sh'del would ask, this
still wouldn't have bee on it! "Me, mentor?" He stared at the
Brownrider, then turned to look back at the boy. His hands curled into
fists. "It doesn't make him any less of a man," he replied angrily.
"No, it makes him more of a man." Sh'del nodded to the younger lad.
"He'll put his hide and his green's on the line, fighting Thread
whilst his da hides away in a stone building. So you up for this?"
"I'm not sure. What would I need to do?"
"That's easy, just follow me." And he walked up to the sad faced lad.
"J'el? This lad here is E'ron...we just wanted to know if you're
okay." At that the boy glanced up at the bleurider and his
Weyrlingmaster and shook his head, before breaking down in tears.
"Oh shards!" E'ron muttered. He stepped forward and put his arm around
the lad's shoulders. "Hey c'mon! This should be the best day of your
life! What's your dragon's name?"
"L-Larenth," the boy stuttered, trying to wipe his eyes and look at
his Weyrlingmaster and the bluerider asking him the question.
"She's a lovely one, son," Sh'del said, patting the lad on the back
and nodding encouragement to E'ron.
"Uh, yeah, she is," E'ron glanced at Sh'del uncertainly. "Do you um,
have some oil for her yet? I can show you how to do it...?"
The burly brownrider nodded encouragement and patted the forlorn green
weyrling's back. "That'd be a brilliant idea. Once she's asleep, can
I have a quick talk with you as well?" He knew that he had to jump on
this as soon as possible and start working on the boy's self
confidence and acceptance of himself.
"J'el and I will come and find you, right J'el?" E'ron tried to keep
his voice light for the younger man's benefit, but he did wonder if he
was over his head.
The boy nodded and stood up, nodding to the weyrling barracks. "She's
just over here, the crowd was too much for her and my da..." He put
on a determined face, though a few tears trickled down his cheeks.
"Come on son, it'll be okay." Sh'del gave the boy's shoulders a
squeeze and nodded to E'ron to take him away.
**Loranth, you have any idea who's the idiot father is?**
}:There's only one?:{ Sh'del snorted at that.
"C'mon, we can be your family," E'ron put a hand on the boy's arm to
guide him through the crowds.
