Meal-time Talk

Date Posted: 12th March 2012

Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 11 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel, Meledei

"Headwoman," Sh'dori greeted the woman with a nod. His eyes fell on her
figure, and he wondered if he could get away with a pat on her behind or
would she just break his fingers. She had a very fine behind.

"Brownrider," she said before taking her seat at the table. There weren't
many empty ones left and Qorri was tired. After all the preparation, she
was going to enjoy her hard work before it was time to see to cleaning up.
As a drudge passed, she ordered herself some food brought, then proceeded
to sit. "So how has everything gone so far?"

"So far, so good," Sh'dori lifted his mug to salute.

"Mm good. We had that whole kerfuffle last time." She had heard the River
Bluff Weyrleader had shown his face this time around and wondered if that
had something to do with it. Her food came and she started to eat. "I hope
Meledei's happy."

"She's a nice kid. She's done well," Sh'dori commented.

"Yeah she is a good kid. I sort of think of her as mine sometimes, funny
enough." There were a lot of them like that, especially the ones that Qorri
had fostered over the turns. "You hear anything from yours?"

"Which one of them? I have lot of those, you know," Sh'dori asked. "I keep
more or less tabs on them all."

"Any of them. Surprise me." She was just fishing for news, so it didn't
matter from where it came really.

"I have another grandchild," Sh'dori told her. "A pretty little girl. Her
mother's is Sh'lua's full sister. You might remember her."

"Where is she? Here or Dragonsfall or where?" Qorri was trying to think
though it was hard keeping up with them all sometimes.

"No, she went to Rising Moon Weyr," Sh'dori said.

"Hmmm I've never been there. Glad for you, though. I'll never had grandkids
myself, but I have enough fosterlings that they're like mine." Popping a
piece of chicken into her mouth, she chewed carefully.

"Do your fosterlings have children, or are they still too young?" Sh'dori
asked. He used his bread to soak up what was left of his soup.

"Some of them do, but not many. They're just now coming to that point." Of
course flights helped things along sometimes.

"Well, there you have it. They can be like grandchildren for you," Sh'dori
said.

"Hmmm sometimes, but I don't see them that much. I just ask after them
sometimes. It's all right, though. I get so busy these days I don't have
much time to run around after the younger ones. Most of my fosterlings now
are chore-turns." Qorri certainly kept them busy until they were old enough
to Stand, craft, or do whatever they were going to do.

"That's always the problem-time. Now that we have Thread, I don't have the
time for family I used to have either," Sh'dori said with a rueful shake of
his head.

"Aye it was very bad there for awhile when thread came back and then..."
She didn't have to mention the tragedy that had befallen the Weyr. Qorri
had seen quite a bit in her turns there. Through it all, though, they had
managed. New dragons meant new life and continued service.

"Oh, yes, it was," Sh'dori's tone turned sad. His daughter had been one of
the victims.

"Well at least things are getting better now." She could see the light at
the end of the tunnel.

"Mmh, yes, they are," Sh'dori agreed with her.
