N'vanik

N'vanik

Confused at being called into the Weyrleader's office, Qorri wondered
what was happening now.
If it wasn't snakes and hurricanes, it was something else. She was
tempted to go ask the chemists
if they had anything to poison the things. **That'd fix them** she
muttered inside her head. When
she reached N'vanik's office, she knocked on the door once, then came
in, since she was expected.

"Janani's leaving," he said without preamble.

"The..." That statement caught her completely offguard. Of all the things
he could have said and she could have been expecting, that was not one
of them. "Is she sick?"

"Nope, she just wants to leave. If she doesn't want to be here, I
don't want to _have_ her." He felt the urge to break something, but
the only thing close at hand was his klah mug, and he _liked_ that
mug.

"But she's senior Weyrwoman. She can't just leave. That's not how it works."
Qorri had learned her Teaching Songs just like anyone else.

"Who's going to stop her? I won't."

"So she doesn't give an egg about tradition then?" Qorri had at first been
confused. Now she was just getting angry. "And she doesn't give an egg about
the Weyr!"

"Exactly." Good thing she was leaving tomorrow morning. Hopefully he
wouldn't have to see her face again. "One of the northern Weyrs needs
an experienced goldrider and she jumped at the chance. If that's the
way she feels about us, good sharding riddance."

"I just..it doesn't work like that. Riders....you have to do your duty." She
was still flailing amidst her anger. "And how does Angdelouth feel about
it?" If Qorri was the dragon, she'd be mad at her rider for such a thing.

"If she's complaining, I haven't heard about it." It reminded him that
Loseth was losing another mate, and that made him even angrier.

}:She will not stay,:{ was the bronze's sad response.

N'vanik slammed his fist on the desk. "We don't need them."

"Well, you know I'm with you for what it's worth." She sighed, looking
down at her hands. What was it with Weyrwomen at Dolphin Cove?
They thought they were so much better with their big fine gold dragons,
but they usually ended up messing everything up. "Does Meledei know?"
Her first thought was to protect the young girl from this.

"Not yet. Shard it, she looked up to Janani." After being neglected by
Traelyn, Meledei had been relieved to have a Weyrwoman give her some
actual training.

"Mmm. So what's the plan? I get to be in charge until the next one flies?
Because the new one hasn't been here long enough. She's still learning.
Put Jyramikah in temporarily?" Her head began to go through the mechanics
of such a thing.

"Do you want to be Weyrwoman? At least you wouldn't run out on us or
go crazy." He wished Qorri _could_ be Weyrwoman. Or that he could
steal Rhosyn from River Bluff.

"Have you ever thought that maybe we should just pack up and go somewhere
else? Windswept Islands Weyr could probably cover this." She gave a nonchalant
shrug as she started to calm down, though the injustice of it all, the
feeling of
abandonment, was still there. "Seriously, though, sign me up. Maybe we can paint
a runner gold and fool them for a bit or something."

That was an interesting image, and it managed to make him smile. "I
won't leave Dolphin Cove. I worked too hard for these people, and so
have you." He sighed. "I guess it'll have to be Cyradis. Jyramikah
couldn't even handle being a 'Second. Maybe we'll have a talk with
Cyradis and ... arrange something."

She had the feeling that more work had just landed on her shoulders.
It was a good
thing they were rather broad. "Not that I think she would but...what's
the contingency
plan if she says no?" Qorri knew that the woman wasn't really ready.
She had only been
at the Weyr a month, for Faranth's sake.

"Then we find another sharding goldrider. There's gotta be someone
that would jump at the chance to lead." Some Weyrwoman's Second or
junior goldrider that had the experience and were just waiting for the
opportunity.

If she was a lesser woman, she might have been frightened by his tone.
Still, Qorri took it as it was. "Allright then. Are _we_ talking to her or are
_you_ talking to her?" She didn't mind either way.

"I think we should do it together. I want to make it clear to her that
for now, you're the expert in Weyr management. I don't want her
screwing things up." He was done playing nice with Weyrwomen. The
important thing was making sure the Weyr ran as smoothly as possible.

"Allright. Any idea on when this talk will take place? I need to eat before
then I think." She was so tired of picking up the pieces of everyone else's
mess.

"After dinner, then. Let's go grab some food now. I'd really like to
get this over with." N'vanik wanted to move on and put Janani behind
him, just like he'd put Traelyn behind him. **How many more Weyrwomen
will I lose?** He couldn't help wondering if something was wrong with
him.

She got up and brushed herself off then walked beside him to the Dining
Cavern. Qorri nodded to people she knew as they passed, wondering how
they were going to react when the rest of the Weyr got the news. Demoralizing
a bunch of dragonriders who already had it hard with a Pass and everything else
was not a good thing. **Stupid Weyrwoman-doesn't even care about her own
people. Maybe we were never hers. Maybe she was always wanting to leave**

N'vanik was tempted to tell everyone now, but it was better to wait
and announce it at breakfast tomorrow. Then Janani would be gone and
they'd have someone in her place. Cyradis at least had to accept being
acting Weyrwoman even if she didn't want to keep the job. The weyrfolk
needed someone in that spot to provide some reassurance. **And I'll
remind them that I'm not going anywhere. They're mine, and I won't
abandon them.**
