"Here ya go Ramzen." Thoren hefted a couple of sacks out of his wagon
and placed them on the ground. "Got whatcha requested." The trader
closed the back of the wagon then stood, hands upon his hips. "How ya
doin' out here?"
"Oh, you know," Ramzen replied. "Can't complain. Well," he amended,
rubbing his bandaged right bicep, "Could complain, but won't. How's
business your end?"
"Doin' all right." Thoren leaned against the back of the wagon and
spat off to the side. Arya, his daughter, was walking up just as he
did so and wrinkled her nose in distaste. She kept her mouth shut,
however, and moved on to tend to the runners. "Should be takin' on
quite a bit of cargo at the Hold. We'll be stayin 'around til after
the Gather. You going?"
"Not often we get a big Gather round these ways," Ramzen replied.
"Rumour has it there'll be dragonriders and everything showing?" He
phrased the last as a question, thinking that the Trader might have a
better idea of just who was planning on showing up.
"Well, you know, it was just officially named a major hold. That's
cause for celebratin." Thoren leaned over and spat again before
calling out. "Arya! Don't go spoilin' tha runners with them redfruits
again." The girl peeked around the wagon, then disappeared again.
"Treatin' them like they was pets she does. Ah well. So, do ya think
you'll go to the Gather?"
"If I can get away from the sales and work, I might get to wandering
round the rest of it," Ramzen replied. "Get a look at these grand folk
turning up in their finest. It's not often we get the Weyrs turn up."
"Really? Seems there's at least a few dragonriders at most Gather."
Thoren spit off to the side again then scratched his chin. "Though I
guess more might turn out to this one. Maybe you'll get some good
sales out of them, aye?"
"I'll be pinning my hopes on the rich lords and ladies, and their
lapcanines," Ramzen replied. "Dragons are a little out of my league. You
setting up stall for it, then?"
"Of course. Gotta take advantage when you can. I can sometimes make
good marks outta a Gather." _Real_ good marks even. Thoren grinned.
"It's worth setting up a booth."
"You going to have time to look around as well? You've your lass to
help you look after the stall, and it isn't often there's boat racing
up and down the shore." Well, not _official_ boatracing. Ramzen
wouldn't like to vouch for the younger seacrafters restraint any time
soon.
"I'll have a little time. Can't leave her too long, but aye, I'll have
a chance. She's a bit flighty when it comes to gathers, can't blame
her. She's young still." Thoren shrugged. "Maybe I can find a good
match for her at this one. We'll see."
"You after a Trader for her, or a Holder?" Ramzen asked. There were
advantages to both, he guessed.
"Whichever would come out the best benefit wise." Thoren could go
either way and it all depended on what he got out of the deal. "Guess
we'll see what happens at the Gather. What about you? You searching
for a wife yet? Or still tryin' to stay single?"
"Succeeding pretty well at it so far," Ramzen replied glibly. "I got a
runner and the whole of a holding to wander in - most women wouldn't
take to that anyway."
"Maybe not, but that doesn't mean they necessarily have a choice in the
matter. Womenfolk do what they're told." Or else. Thoren nodded
sagely. Not that his daughter always obeyed, but he wasn't about to
let in on that.
"Well, if I find one that's worth the trouble, I'll change my tune
soon enough," Ramzen said, with a non-committal shrug. "Anyway, I'll
let you get on," he said, hefting the sacks onto his shoulders. "Good
luck with the Gather."
"Thanks. I'll see you later." With that Thoren called out to his
daughter and then the two of them headed off.
