"Have a seat, Cyradis," N'vanik said. Qorri was already there.
She was sitting comfortably in the other seat, sipping juice. Dinner
had been good and it was going a long way to soothing her anger,
though it was still there under the surface as she sized up this goldrider
quietly. **Can she do it? Will she do it?**
Her conscience was clear so when she was summoned to the Weyrleaders
office she didn't have any idea what it could be about. She crossed
the office, taking a seat where he'd indicated and nodded to the
headwoman.
"I called you here to let you know Janani has decided to leave Dolphin
Cove." Saying it made him angry all over again.
Quiet, she waited to see Cyradis' reaction. The woman was older, maybe..
Maybe she would be dependable.
The feeling in the room told her these two weren't happy about the
news. She didn't quite believe it herself. "Will she be coming back?"
Cyradis looked between the other two.
"No. So we need a new Senior Weyrwoman. Since Jyramikah is useless and
Meledei is too young, you're it." He had to struggle to keep his tone
civil.
"We understand you haven't been here that long and you don't know a lot
of things about this Weyr and how it is run. To that effect, I will continue to
manage the domestic side of things for a long while until you feel comfortable."
She didn't want the woman to feel marginalized, but it had to be said. They
couldn't afford for things to be screwed with. "However, Janani's duties as a
rider will be all yours."
**Oh really?** The anger in both the other people in the room was
evident now. She partially understood the reasons having been working
to straighten out a significant mess in the Weyr's records for the
last month. She looked straight at the Weyrleader without a hint of a
smile. She realized she was witnessing the anger that should be
directed at Janani or Traelyn but they were choosing to take it out on
her. That didn't bode well for their future relationship. She wasn't
going to fall prey to the same emotion and make the situation worse.
Neither was she going to be walked over.
"Do you share the headwoman's opinion of where my duties will lie
Weyrleader," she asked in an even tone.
"Yes," N'vanik answered. "Qorri was running most of the domestic
duties before Janani arrived and she can show you how things work
here. If you want to make changes, the two of you can discuss it."
**This is going to be so much fun** She could already see the unhappy look
in Cyradis' eyes. Qorri knew all about being put in bad situations and part of
her felt sorry for Cyradis. All of this had been dumped in her lap because of
someone else's failings as a person. Still, if she was worth it as a goldrider,
she would manage.
"I see," she said softly. While she understood their teamwork, she had
no intention of starting her tenure here under the anyone's thumb. "I
am neither useless, nor inexperienced." She looked back and forth
between the two of them. "I have been the Weyrwoman's Second at more
than one Weyr and I assure you I am more than capable." She hadn't
spent all those turns sunning on a beach after all. She had been
Senior after her mentor died so tragically. Yet she hadn't been
confirmed because her rival's gold rose first and that could still
happen here.
"If you just want a figurehead, perhaps you have the wrong goldrider
and you should reconsider Jyramikah. If you want me to do this job
then I will do _all_ of it, with the Headwoman's assistance of
course." She wasn't about to denigrate Qorri's obvious abilities.
"Jyramikah can't lead a Wing. You can. And I don't want you to start
managing the Weyr your way and then have you end up leaving like the
last two Weyrwomen." It wasn't her experience he didn't trust.
Hating to be in the middle of this, Qorri knew it was best to let them slug
it out so to speak. As Weyrleader, N'vanik was the ultimate authority in the
Weyr and it was his decision that mattered. However, if Cyradis didn't go along
with this, at least for awhile, then they would have no Weyrwoman. Under
her breath she cursed Janani again.
"And so because you're angry with the last two Weyrwomen who happened
to desert you, my twenty two turns of dedication to a single Weyr in
the north count for nothing. Am I understanding you correctly
N'vanik?" She hadn't raised her voice even though she was fuming. "I'm
not the one who left."
"No, you just got here. I barely know you. So you were loyal to your
last Weyr, how do I know you'll be loyal to _us_?" It would be the
same gamble with any new Weyrwoman, and he had to remind himself that
at least Cyradis was here now, and that had to count for something.
Maybe it was time to play peacemaker. The headwoman was beginning to
think if she didn't, her head was going to seriously hurt with too much more
of this or Cyradis might even run off, angry, and then where would they be?
"We want to give you time to learn before we let you have all the duties. You
have only been here a month, goldrider. It wouldn't be fair for us to dump
everything into your lap. In time, once you have things in hand, you will have
more control if your gold flies next. For now, we have to protect our weyrfolk
and be mindful of what they need-stability. Like it or not with the
situation we're
in-I'm stable."
There was an ominous reminder there. It could be all too true that in
a few months Cyradis would have to give up duties anyhow if Panitath didn't
rise next. So what was the point of taking them all now?
At first Cyradis was slightly mollified at Qorri's tone. She'd seemed
to temper their stance by making it more palatable and about educating
her more than preventing her from doing half her job. But no, she took
it back with her '_If_ your gold flies next,' followed by her own
claim about her stability. Cyradis saw red. Why had the Weyrleader
chosen to have the sharding Headwoman in this conversation anyway.
They thought they could just team up and walk over her did they? "Well
that was well dusted!"
Deep anger boomed from the heights of the Weyr. Panitath bellowed from
where she had been sunning as Cyradis' rage spilled into her link. She
stood to her full height which was still shorter than the two of them.
"Despite my stature, I am not a child and I _am_ loyal if shown
loyalty," she said to N'vanik. "I am very organized and have done this
job before. I know _exactly_ the risks involved are here. I invested
my heart and soul into that Weyr and then lost the position to..." She
refused to name the woman and give her any more power in her life. "So
don't feel you need to warn _me_ about the risks involved."
She wanted to just walk away and leave these two to their own devices
with a woman who didn't care and a young girl but she couldn't do that
to all the other people here. This Weyr had gone through too much to
let her indulge her temper and leave. "I _am_ stable whether the two
of you choose to believe me or not."
"I'll lead the wing," she spat at N'vanik. "But you will rue this, I
promise you." She spun on her heel barely able to breathe in her rage.
"Faranth take you both," she said as she stomped out. There were many
unhappy dragons on the heights and she needed to go calm down before
she could console her queen.
"Well that went well," Qorri said ruefully. "If that one goes up next, are you
sure you want Loseth to win?" Despite the bad situation, the stress, and this
new development, all she could do was laugh. **Goldriders and their egos**
N'vanik could pack up and go. Qorri was stuck here with _that_ apparently.
"Right now I'm not sure if I want him to win at all," N'vanik
admitted. "That's two Senior Weyrwomen gone in less than a turn. If
Cyradis is going to be number three, I'd rather have her gone sooner
than later." Although her show of temper was impressive. If she fought
for the Weyr as strongly as she defended her pride, maybe there was
some hope.
"Do you want to be the one to tell Meledei?" The look on her face said she
would do it if he didn't. Qorri loved her very much, though she had never openly
admitted it. In her, she saw someone else who had suffered as she had.
He nodded. "I'll tell her." One unpleasant meeting after another.
