N'vanik

N'vanik

N'vanik finished up with a hide, waiting for D'shiel to arrive. He
hoped this meeting would be a positive one. There had been more than
enough bad meetings lately.

D'shiel knocked on the door, also hoping this wouldn't be a bad
meeting. He wasn't sure why he was even there, truthfully. He couldn't
think of anything he'd done wrong recently, to warrant being called to
the Weryleader's office.

}:You always assume its bad!:{ Padraith scolded, but sounded amused.

**Not always! Just...until I know what it's about, I'm assuming...**

"Come in," the Weyrleader called. "D'shiel, have a seat."

D'shiel did as asked, but on the edge of the seat, his hands on his
knees. He looked and felt ill at ease.

N'vanik went right to the point. "I called you in here to ask if you
wanted to take over as Wingleader for Cyclone."

It took a bit longer for the point to sink in. D'shiel blinked. "Do I
want to...?" Shards! He hadn't been expecting this!

}:Yes but you'll take it?:{

**Yes!**

"It'd be my go honour to serve the Weyr as a wingleader," he said coolly.

"Great. I need a replacement for K'hetah, and you were the best
choice." N'vanik smiled. R'enh would have been a good choice, too, but
he didn't want to give up his 'Second. He opened a drawer to pull out
Weyrleader knots. "You can start tomorrow."

D'shiel leaned forward to accept the knots. "Thank you. This was a
pleasant surprise, I have to say." He considered who else there would
have been to choose from and supposed he was the most experienced.

"We've had more than enough unpleasant surprises. I'm glad this was a
pleasant one." N'vanik cursed Janani for the hundredth time for
abandoning them.

D'shiel nodded. "Yes, that was sudden. I gather you didn't know it was
coming either? Some of the riders are...a bit upset about. If you
can't rely on your leaders..." He shrugged. "Still, we'll pull
through, we always do."

"Well _I'm_ not going anywhere at least, and I hope you'll stick
around for a long while too."

"I have no intention of leaving while Dolphin Cove stands," D'shiel
had never even entertained the idea, why would he? "I'll do what I can
to make this time of transition as smooth as possible."

"Thanks." D'shiel seemed like a steady, serious rider and that's what
Cyclone needed. "Any questions, or anything you'd like to discuss?"

"Only to ask if there is anything I can do to help? Apart from take on
the wing of course." As if that wasn't big enough!

"Find me a Weyrwoman that won't leave," N'vanik joked.

"Maybe the one we have just needs a good reason to stay," D'shiel commented.

That brought up N'vanik's insecurities. "Do you think the last two
didn't have good reasons?"

D'shiel sighed. He certainly hadn't meant that! "I'm sure they did,
but apparently not good reasons enough. I was referring to personal
reasons, like some sort of an attachment." He shrugged. Cyradis'
love-life was certainly none of his business! Not that he'd have
minded if it was.

"Well, she won't get it from me." He wasn't going down that road again.

"I wasn't trying to imply..." D'shiel threw his hands up. "All right,
maybe we should drop the subject. Was there anything else I needed to
know?"

N'vanik shook his head. "Good luck with the Wing."

"It's a good wing," D'shiel said. "We won't need luck, just skill and
hard work." His eyes were full of determination as he rose to his
feet. "Thank you sir."
