Description: Cyradis approaches the headwoman to see about changes
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 27 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik, Almonteo, Janani
Cyradis waited a day after her talk with N'vanik to allow him plenty
of time to have his promised chat with the Headwoman. The day was
beautiful and sunny as most of them were here this time of turn. She
didn't feel the need to jockey for position when Panitath would hand
it to her soon enough. Instead, she made her way to the lower caverns
after lunch and went to find Qorri in her own environment. If she was
going to learn from the woman she wanted it to be a pleasant
experience for them both, if possible.
After asking a few questions she was finally pointed to the right
place to find her. "Qorri," she asked with a smile. "Do you have some
time?"
Qorri had just finished asking a drudge to cart off a tunnelsnake carcass.
The things were losing the war, she surmised, but they were getting desperate.
That made them more dangerous. So when the Weyr's newest goldrider
came up behind her, it wasn't exactly her finest moment. "About a half
candlemark before I have to go check the candidate barracks," came the
tired answer.
She could see the weariness on Qorri like a cloak but she didn't think
the woman would appreciate her pointing it out. "I'll only need a few
minutes," she said with a pleasant expression. "How's the battle
going," she asked pointing with her chin after the departing drudge.
"Sharding snakes..." she muttered before wiping sweat from her brow.
"Seems like they grow quicker in the heat. I wish they would all fry."
Switching gears, she walked a bit before replying to the goldrider.
"Allright, what exactly do you want to know?"
"I'm with you there," Cyradis sympathized. Shadow had left her a
'trophy' of a half eaten tunnel snake. Of course it was rather gnawed
and there was evidence of more than one flit involved in its capture.
He'd been contrite but she'd made sure she'd appreciated his bravery
and the scenes of the battle.
"I suppose N'vanik has talked with you?" She didn't want to come
across wrong with Qorri so obviously tired. "I'm willing to take on
those tasks that are normally the Weyrwoman's if you want to show me
how it's done here."
"Aye seems he's changed his mind. So I suppose we'll set up a schedule
and you can observe. Will likely take a month before you feel comfortable
with things I'd say." Some things wouldn't take so long, but others would.
Southern Weyrs worked a little differently than their northern counterparts.
"That's fine," she started. "But I think you'll find that most Weyr
management is pretty similar and I know 95% of what it will take to do
most things the Dolphin Cove way. The other 5% shouldn't take that
long to learn. I really don't like to see you so weary when I've too
much time on my hands."
"I'd be fine if I didn't have snakes popping up everywhere," she grumbled,
inwardly seething about this recent development. It could have been firelizards,
wherries, anything-but snakes! "One thing I'll ask since it will greatly affect
your tithing-have you met all of our Lord Holders and Craftmasters?"
She smiled. "I met quite a few of them at the hatching. Of course it
was only a few days after I arrived. I could certainly stand to
strengthen ties." She waved a hand. "I don't believe I met Master
Almonteo however."
"Ohh that one I would make a point of indeed. Influence with him is
influence over a lot of the south, though since he let in females it's
lessened somewhat." A frown came over her face. She had been holdbred
so she didn't generally think it well for girls to be doing such
things. "You and Panitath might start making some fieldtrips. I don't
know if they all know you're acting Weyrwoman or that Janani's gone
anyway so it might be a good idea." That had been N'vanik's place to
tell them- not Qorri's.
"I'll make a point of reaching out to him then. Maybe we can aid him
in some fashion and thereby make a natural introduction to the Lord
and Lady of Emerald Falls. That's where they're moving from what I've
heard." She was still learning some of the political map of the
southern continent but she had a fairly good handle on those holds
beholden to Dolphin Cove. Qorri's suggestion was sound.
"Thank you Qorri," she smiled. "That will get me started. But, I'd
like to meet with you in the next few days," she held up her hands to
indicate she wasn't trying to rush the headwoman. "When you have the
time. I would like to make some notes on gathering around the area and
time frames for some of the herbs and other supplies. We don't want to
run out of numbweed salve." As leader of the Queen's wing she always
had riders who were still too ill to fly Thread but they could do other
things, like spotting game or patches of a particularly needed plant
so they could send out gathering parties. Besides it strengthened
injured wings and got them back into active duty all that much sooner.
Most importantly it made them feel needed.
"Emmm....We get the salve from the Holds in tithe primarily. I don't have
the staff or the time to be spending days boiling weed down. As far as
gathering, the healers take groups of brats out every so often to get what
we need that we can and I keep a running inventory. It's a part of the
childrens' chores." With Dolphin Cove's temperate climate, they could get
quite a bit but it wasn't hard work really except for the hot sun.
"Ok," she smiled. "Point taken. You tell me where we can help and
where I can put the injured riders to be of best assistance. Some of
them are feeling rather useless and we need to give them some work."
"Honestly, it depends on their skills. The healers always need folk to do
minor things. The dragonhealers as well. And sometimes it's useful for
them to see that they're not so bad-that there's worse out there." The
wingriders were the Weyrwoman's business so she didn't want to tell
her what to do really...Qorri wasn't a rider-it wasn't her place.
Cyradis nodded, she agreed with the assessment and had put something
similar into place where she'd been before. Of course, she had no
'track record' here at Dolphin Cove and that was the major difficulty
she was trying to overcome.
"Well," she said. "I don't want to take too much of your time. Let's
set aside a few minutes tomorrow if possible to talk through one
subject and we can move on from there. Meanwhile, I'll visit with the
Harper Hallmaster."
With that on her mind she turned and left to go find Almonteo.
