Characters: D'shiel, Cyradis
Description: D'shiel comes to talk about injured riders returning to the fighting wing from the Queen's wing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 20 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik
Cyradis pulled out her notes from the Weyrdragonhealer and the
Weyrhealer regarding several riders and their current status. It was
almost time for her weekly meeting with the Cyclone Wingleader and she
was quite certain he'd be pressuring her for the return of some of his
riders. Dolphin Cove wasn't quite robust enough to say they could
keep riders recuperating as long as they ought at time. But she was
ever vigilant to back up the healers reconciliations and make certain
they weren't pushed beyond their abilities too soon. That path only
led to a cycle of injuries that could end up tragically.
D'shiel was a few minutes late, but wasn't going to arrive puffing. He
walked briskly though and knocked on Cyradis's door before pushing it
the rest of the way open and stepping inside.
"Come on in," Cyradis smiled and waived him toward a chair. "How was training?"
"Same old, same old." he shrugged. "We're getting better though. You
know how some riders are with a new leader." He knew she would know
all too well!
"Oh yes I do," she smiled. "It's been quite an adventure around here."
"And we're so short on adventure around here, what with Threadfall and
all," he replied ironically.
Cyradis smiled with genuine humor. **Now this is a bronzer I could
like.** She wondered for a moment whether there were a real
possibility of him becoming her Weyrleader at the next flight. Well
that certainly would be change beyond what N'vanik wanted.
"But I suppose with time things will settle. At least at the wing level."
"Faranth forbid, I like keeping my wing on its toes," he smiled. "In
all seriousness, I think the Weyr would benefit from some time spent
without a huge upheaval in the leadership. At least for a month or
two."
She nodded, "Me too." While she agreed with him on the whole she
didn't want another one of the Weyr's riders blaming _her_ for what
had happened. "It's bad timing and personal loss for N'vanik. But not
_my_ fault." She held up her hands.
She nodded toward his notes, "What did you have for me today?"
"Just this," he said, dropping his notes on the desk. "I'm just
wondering when K'kam will be gracing my wing with his presence again?"
Cyradis tilted a small smile at the bronze rider. "Depends on who you
talk to actually. If you talk to the healers, he's ready. If you talk
to him, he's still got pains they can't explain."
"I'll give him pain they can't explain," he said under his breath.
"And what, Lady Cyradis, is your opinion?" he asked, quirking an
eyebrow at her.
"I'd say he's milking it. It's not his neck or back where unexplained
pain can be the signal of something we can't see. His lifemate is fit
and ready to fly." She thought for a moment. "Do you have a pretty
rider to throw at him? If he can manage some amorous activity with
her I'm fairly certain he's fine."
"I'm not usually in the habit of throwing riders at other riders," he
replied dryly. "So unless you're offering your time then maybe you can
just send him to drills in the morning?"
"And I'm not in the habit of releasing riders from my wing even if I
happen to think they may be milking it. If they are the least bit
unready it's a disaster waiting to happen." She didn't care for the
bronze rider's tone nor his insinuation. She had never been a 'light
skirt,' as many holders referred to their female riders at times. She
knew for a fact that there were young woman in the Weyr to slept with
any and every rider they wanted without thought. She didn't judge them
or even think about their personal business in that fashion. "So no,"
she said evenly, "I will not be _just_ sending him to drills in the
morning. Not until I'm _sure_."
"You _are_ the one who said he's milking it." D'shiel frowned,
confused at her sudden about face. "If you don't think he's ready,
then he's not ready." He'd obviously offended her with his off the
cuff remark, but he didn't much appreciate her suggestion that he use
his riders like that
"Yes I am," she smiled. But that wasn't a smile most people liked to
see on her. "I was merely looking for a way to let him drop his act so
to speak. Ok, I'll find something creative for dear K'kam that will
make him _want_ to rejoin your wing rather than stay in mine. I
imagine some elevator duty will remind him that 'light duties' doesn't
mean 'relaxing'."
D'shiel nodded. "Very well then. And if he's had enough of that, he
can be on watch all night." he grinned.
She smiled back. This time it was more sincere. Truthfully she was a
little sorry she'd let her temper flare momentarily.
"And if he doesn't like that..." I can't think of anything else," he
shrugged. She got the idea, whatever would get the man back to work!
"Oh," she said with a particularly evil smile. "I'm sure I can if he
really is well."
He grinned. "I have no doubt about that, none at all!"
