Nwalin rubbed his palms against his legs restlsssly. They felt damp to
him and the last thing he wanted to do was have sweaty palms when
approaching the Weyrwoman! But the idea of just going up and talking
to such an important lady, just seemed to make his palms all the more
clammy feeling. Not to mention the entire swarm of crawlers that were
trundling around in his belly at the notion. He'd only just arrived at
the Weyr a day ago and he hadn't even had a chance to meet all his
fellow candidates yet, much less the rider. Much less the Weyrwoman!
Now he was the one randomly picked to report to her in order to help
with some task and he wasn't sure at all how he was supposed to
behave. Taking a deep breath, the thirteen turns old boy knocked on
the door.
Cyradis was expecting her daily 'helper' from the candidate pool and
she'd asked Qorri for a boy today. She liked the more informal way of
getting to knew the young people to be presented to Panitath's next
clutch combined with some interview questions hidden along the way.
"Come in," she called and looked up at the door expectantly from her desk.
Exhaling slowly, Nwalin opened the door and stepped inside. He glanced
around curiously for a moment - curiosity was a trait which had gotten
him in trouble in the past and he just couldn't help himself. He shook
himself mentally though, not wanting to give a bad first impression,
and stepped further into the room, offering the Weyrwoman a polite
bow. "You wanted to see me, ma'am?" He really wished he could wipe his
hands on his pants again without being seen to do it.
"Yes," she said and swept her hands toward several boxes on the floor.
"I need these moved across the hall to my workshop." She had worked
with the headwoman to convert a small storage room for her distillary
and been setting up things there to make her citroncello. It took
only small portions of her time but it certainly helped for it to be
nearby.
Well, that wasn't too difficult a task. One his mother might've called
on him to do back home. The familiarity helped a bit with the boy's
nerves, though he did spare a moment to hope his hands weren't so
sweaty he wound up dropping something. "Yes, ma'am. Which one do you
want me to do first?"
"That one would be fine," she said. She opened a closet room to
retrieve her keys.
The boy nodded and picked up the box she'd pointed to. It was heavier
than it looked, but nothing he couldn't handle. "What's in them?" he
asked before he realized he was even speaking, his curiosity getting
the better of him again.
"Oh just some bottles," she waved a hand. "I'm working on a new
cordial and I needed more of the small bottles." She half smiled at
the question as she walked a little ways down the hallway to unlock a
storeroom door. "You can slide it right in there." She pointed to a
bottom shelf.
Knowing there was something breakable in the box he was holding gave
the boy a bit of a pause. But it wasn't very heavy so he brushed the
worry about dropping it and shattering all the Weyrwoman's bottles out
of his mind and moved to place the box on the shelf she'd indicated.
"Do you want the others on this shelf too?"
"Yes please," she smiled. There was no need to scare candidates unless
they were misbehaving. She turned to the table where she was
processing a batch of her Citroncello in a rather large bottle. She
looked up at the glows and sighed. The light was so poor in this room.
She wished fervently for electricity.
The candidate paused in lifting up the next box, hearing the Weyrwoman
sigh. After a moment's internal debate, he asked, "Is something the
matter, ma'am?"
"Oh, just not enough light in this room to do what I'd like with this mess."
"Do you need more glows? I could get some for you?"
She turned a smile on the young man. "Yes, that would be very nice, thank you."
"Sure!" The boy hefted the box he was holding and moved it to the
shelf, next to the other in the workshop. Then he announced, "I'll be
right back with those glows and then I'll get the rest of these."
Having is offer accepted and so obviously appreciated pleased the boy.
He felt more of his nerves settle as he strode down the corridor. The
Weyrwoman might be a Very Important Person, but she was a person. She
couldn't see in the dark anymore than he could, for instance!
