Cyradis

Cyradis

Cyradis had her notes all laid out for her weekly meeting with Qorri.
While they kept in contact most days, once a sevenday they sat down and
discussed the Weyr's domestic issues. As they had worked together over
the last few months Cyradis had come to value Qorri's common sense and
excellent planning skills.

She shoo'd Shadow off one of her stacks of hides as she got up to pour
herself a cup of tea.

Having come fresh from her daily bath, Qorri was clean and smelled nice
for once. Dolphin Cove's heat usually made her sweat quite a bit and the
headwoman tended toward a natural odor. Of course, she didn't want the
Weyrwoman of all people to comment on that so she had freshly washed.
With a sheaf of hides under her arm, she came to a stop outside of Cyradis'
door. One tap was all she made.

"Come in," called Cyradis and seeing who it was greeted her with a
smile. "Have a seat."

Making her bulk comfortable, the headwoman grabbed a glass of water instead.
Adding a bit of citron to it and sweetener, she sipped and found it adequate
as she laid her hides out.

"Before we start on the usual agenda," she started. "I have an idea
that I've discussed with N'vanik and would like your input."

That perked Qorri's interest naturally. N'vanik hadn't mentioned anything like
that to her yet so that meant something. Watching Cyradis and trying to think
of what it could be, she nodded. "Go ahead."

"You've been operating here for some time with only the minimum of
electricity. I think we can improve that and the Weyrleader agrees."
She smiled at the Headwoman. "So, to that end, I would like to build a
plan and prioritize our greatest needs first."

Her eyes widened ever so slightly. Qorri had learned not to get her hopes
up and something like this was going to take turns anyway. In the past, she
hadn't really had access to electricity so it was no difference to
her. "Ah well..." Speechless, she shuffled her hides some, trying to
think. "Well besides lighting
what is it generally used for?"

She spread her hands. "Refrigeration for one thing. I was told you
have some small refrigeration capacity. That could be enlarged."

"We only have one room at the back of the kitchens. It's quite large,
but that's all. The fans....those were installed forever ago with the
bathing pools." Qorri didn't know what made them run really. She just
knew she depended upon them. "Lighting
would be fantastic though, since we do most of our tasks at night when
it isn't hot."

"Yes," she nodded. "I'd like to see lighting in all the main rooms and
even through the weyrs. And can you imagine if we had fans everywhere
too? Like on the ceiling, cooling things down?" She was becoming more
enthusiastic as they talked.

"I'm guessing you mean a different sort of fan. We have huge large ones that
are somehow cut into the rock." Qorri looked perplexed. Indeed, this seemed to
be turning into a conversation that was above her understanding. "If we do it in
the weyrs, it's going to take a very long time, I'd imagine." Not that she was
against it but it being a Pass and all, crafters were needed for other things so
the work would go slowly. Now once the Interval came, that was something else.

"It is," she nodded. "I've seen them in the north. Some of them are
attached to lights in the ceiling and you can turn them on by pulling
a cord. She made a circle of her arms to indicate the size. "About
this big around. They can make a whole room feel cooler."

One of the headwoman's brows raised up as she considered this. "Well,
we can put it to them once you have a plan in place. Of course
creating power would be the first priority, then installing the
conduits needed for the power to come into the Weyr, and then the
things we're going to use it for." So it would be a three-fold process
to her way of thinking. She tapped her stylus on the hide as she
considered. It would definitely take quite a few turns.

"Yes," she agreed. "The Smith masters are already discussing that.
There isn't a large river nearby for a dam but there is plenty of
geothermal activity and they feel they can build a geothermal
generator like the ones at Garnet Valley Hold. So we won't lack for
power. The small generator we already have in place can be enhanced
with another one near by."

"Okay, my next question is..while all this is going on of course I'll have
to deal with the Craftmasters but other than that, what will it mean for my
responsibilities?" And she certainly didn't want to share much of her staff.
It seemed like they didn't have enough as it was.

Cyradis smiled. Obviously Qorri was thinking ahead like a proper
manager should in the situation. "Thank you for bringing that up," she
said. "We aren't going to change anything over night by any means.
Technicians are scarce as it is. I doubt the impact of a few crafters
will be even felt at first." They were still planning as far as she
was concerned. "Over time it may ramp up a bit as any construction
project will but I hope to keep disruptions at a minimum."

"Obviously Emerald Falls has resources with their build of the Harper
Hall. So, N'vanik and I will call on Lord Corowal and discuss the plan
with him as well. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement for part of
his tithes to include some support for this plan. Don't you think?"

"Actually I disagree. His extra resources would be going to the harper
hall construction, leaving him with not much else. I'd look at some of the
other Holds without projects since they would have a surplus." Qorri thought
about it further. "You may even approach some of those who have rider
relatives in their Lines first-they'd probably be more amicable-since it could
be seen as a frivolous expense to some-expanding our creature comforts so
to speak."

Cyradis held up a hand. "You misunderstand. We still have months of
planning before we can begin construction efforts. When I say I'll
coordinate with the Hold, I mean to employ the crafters when Corowal
is finished with them or they have a break in their schedule. I'm well
aware he has them quite busy at the moment. But there is merit in your
idea of approaching some of our riders' relatives."

"Hmm.... wonder how much longer they have on the Hall. I know Master
Almonteo was talking turns but they've been at it for a bit. I haven't been
given an updated schedule as to when we need to help move the last of
their folk recently." Qorri made a note of that on her list.

"True, but as you know these things tend to go in phases. We can
transport technicians back and forth easily so they can work here when
they aren't working there."

"To start the plans of this, we'll have to go to the Hallmaster at the
Technicians'
Hall anyway. Have you spoken to him?" That would be the next step and Qorri
didn't think it would involve her too much which was just as well. She
had plenty
else to do.

"Yes agreed," she acknowledged. "I just want to make sure we're on the
same scroll of where to start once we have their attention. And that
we have housing available for the workmen when they arrive. Do you
think we'll be able to make room in the candidates' barracks or in the
lower caverns?" She wasn't certain what size teams they'd suggest so
she just wanted to be prepared
with the appropriate facts. She waved a hand , "Sorry, I'm sure you'd
have to take inventory of available rooms before you can answer that.
I'll just trust you to come up with an approximation for planning
purposes."

"It depends on how many folks I have to house. Most of the harpers are
gone so I have room there. I would prefer not to have strange folk
near the candidates, however. Especially those from outside the Weyr
who may have ideas that all Weyrgirls are morally questionable." Her
frown was visible then. No, her girls would not be taken advantage of
and she didn't want to have to deal with anything of that nature.

She wholeheartedly agreed with Qorri on the candidates and it warmed
her heart to know the Headwoman cared that much about her charges to
protect them from unwarranted hazing. Of course any candidate got
their share from other candidates.

"Alright then," she replied. "I'll meet with some of the Hallmasters
and try to come up with some sort of timetable for housing for you."
She smiled and set that hide aside. "Now, what do you have for me
today?"
