Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 19 of Turn 6
The Wing meeting had gone a bit long and then he'd stayed to talk to
N'vanik after the other riders had left. So when he got to the dining
hall it was packed and he had to search for an empty chair. He didn't
want to spend any more time discussing the things that had gone wrong
in the drills this afternoon. Then he saw someone he really _would_
like to talk to. And there was an empty chair right across from her.
"Evening Cosani," he said as he slid into the chair. "Mind if we share?"
She was surprised to see R'enh and blinked. "Oh, no. Go ahead." Her
stomach made a strange little flutter and she caught herself before
she frowned at the sensation. Cosani didn't want R'enh to think she
was frowning at _him_.
He slid his food off the tray and set it aside. Smiling at Cosani he
picked up his fork. "How have you been?"
"Pretty good." She'd talked to him a few times since he'd won her
flight, but only in passing.
He took a big bite of a piece of crusty bread and chewed thoughtfully.
He remembered the flight Mnoranth had won and the willing sweetness of
her bed. His eyes twinkled at her. "So, we never did get around to
that 'next time' we talked about, did we?"
"No." Her mouth turned up in a slight smile and the flutter happened
again. "I guess I figured you might be busy with duties and stuff."
He picked up his drink and raised it to his mouth. "I have been, but
that's no excuse." He took a sip and set the glass down. He stared at
her a moment. "You know, you have beautiful eyes." And she did. They
were the most amazing shade of silvery blue he'd ever seen.
"You don't have to flatter me to get me into bed." She looked down and
took a bite of her food, feeling a bit wary.
His eyes crinkled with amusement as she looked down at her food. "You
don't believe you have beautiful eyes?" He picked up his bread again
and tore off a piece with his fingers. "As I recall," he started in a
low voice. "There were _many_ beautiful things about you." He put down
the bread and covered her had where it lay on the table. "And I think
you should make anyone flatter you to get you into bed." He paused for
affect. "You're worth it."
Even though his words made her feel like blushing, she forced herself
not to let it show. "Do you sleep with a lot of women?"
He could throw out the standard answer about bronze riders but she
already knew all that so he didn't take the question at face value.
"I'm selective when I have the choice" he said softly. "So I guess it
would depend on what you mean by a lot."
"What I mean is ... you're not going to get all possessive, are you?"
Most of Cosani's bedmates had been promiscuous men, ones she knew
would either move on or have several partners at once.
"Well no," his brows knit. He'd never been moved to weyrmate anyone
before. That was about the only reason he could think of for anyone to
become possessive. Things just naturally seemed to work out if you
were kind to your partner, or at least that was the way he saw it.
"Are you?"
"Shells no. I just want to have some fun." Being with R'enh certainly
had been that.
"Fun sounds very good to me," he smiled. For a moment he'd thought she
wanted to get serious and he was actually relieved.
"Oh, good." Her shoulders loosened and she took another bite of her
half-finished food.
He chuckled "Great mind's think alike," and dug into his own plate. If
he was reading things right he'd need his energy.
When only a few bites were left, Cosani looked at him. "So are you
busy now?" She'd been intensely aware of him as she ate.
"Never too busy for you," he smiled.
"Oh really? I might hold you to that." It hit her again that this was
her father's Wingsecond. It seemed sort of wrong to be rolling in the
furs with him ... and that made it more appealing. Cosani stood. "My
weyr or yours?"
"Ladies choice," he said expansively. He didn't often bring anyone
back to his weyr but he was rather a neat person. So, other than his
work bench which had several things in process, he wasn't at all
ashamed of what she would find should she choose his weyr.
"Yours." She wanted to see it. "You probably have a bigger bed." Cosani grinned.
"I'm sure I probably do," he smiled back. "But I don't imagine we'll
need to use all of it." His weyr was quite nice with room for his son.
Though Zorenh was staying in the candidates barracks more often than
not these days and tonight he was with his friends.
She walked beside him as they left the dining cavern. When they
reached the hall, she found the courage to take his hand. Her stomach
did that funny flutter again.
His fingers wrapped around her small hand firmly and he turned to
looked down at her with a smile. He hoped it was encouraging as she
seemed just a little nervous. After a bit of a walk and a climb they
were at his door. He pushed it open. "See? It's not all that huge."
Cosani took a good look around. "Bigger than mine. And cleaner." She
stepped further inside, admiring his personal things. Moving closer to
a shelf, she said, "You have a lot of jewelry for a man."
He smiled and walked up behind her. "I have to practice you know." He
leaned against the wall next to her. "See anything you like?"
"It's all very ..." she couldn't find a better word, so she settled
on, "pretty." Then her gaze settled on a deep red jewel and she
reached for it.
That particular stone had drawn his attention at a recent gather. The
deep brown red seemed to draw you into its depths. "That's a
particularly fine garnet," he said. "I haven't quite decided what to
do with it yet. But I've made some sketches. Would you like to see?"
"Yeah." She held the garnet for a moment and gently set it down.
"Later, though." A slow smile curled her lips. "I want you first."
"Good," he replied and bent to capture her lips.
A warm rush filled her, and she wondered why she had waited so long to
be with him again.
