Description: N'vanik meets with his Wingsecond after the accident.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 17 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Talryne
As soon as he knew how bad it was, N'vanik called for his Wingsecond.
R'enh showed up in the infirmary almost as soon as he got the message.
He'd been hanging around the outside from the time they'd finished the
Fall and he'd been able to break away from his duties. "How are you
feeling," he asked as he got closer to the Weyrleader.
"Like a dragon fell on my head." He gave R'enh a weak smile.
R'enh snorted. "Faker, it was just a little one."
"They don't seem so little when they land on you." He managed a little
chuckle. "They want to keep me today and tomorrow for observation. The
head bump will keep me grounded for a sevenday or two at least. The
shoulder ... well, that's looking more like a month. You'll need to
lead drills and Fall, and probably handle most of the hidework, too.
Functionally, you're Weyrleader until I get better."
R'enh gave a short nod. He'd known this day could come. But thankfully
it was only for a short period of time, or at least that was what the
healers said. That wasn't to say he didn't want it of course but he'd
learned a lot from N'vanik. Not only that but he'd found a good friend
in the process. "I'll handle it. You concentrate on getting well.
Anything you need me to do right away?"
"Check in with the rest of the Wing, make sure they're not too
rattled." Losing one of their own was hard enough without having their
Weyrleader out of commission. "And let me know if anybody gives you an
attitude."
"Got it," he said making a mental note. "Don't worry, I can handle
anyone who has a problem." His eyes narrowed and a grim smile lifted
one corner of his mouth. He was ambitious but more concerned at this
point with N'vanik's health.
"Any idea how long you'll be out? How often do you want reports?"
"I hope not longer than a month. I want a brief report every other
day, plus a longer one after Fall." He sighed. "The odds are looking
like they're in your favor."
"Yes sir," he said to the instructions. Then he shook his head. "Don't
think that way," he said. N'vanik was more than just the Weyrleader to
him. Over the months since he'd come to Dolphin Cove he'd learned to
respect and enjoy the man's company. He was a friend. "Loseth is fine.
You know that."
"I don't doubt him. I never doubt him." But there were other factors
in a Flight. Dragons were affected by their rider's illness or injury.
And the other dragons seemed to have some kind of influence over the
Senior gold's Flight, so they could sway things toward another bronze.
And N'vanik had done little to get on Cyradis' good side. Her
preferences could change the outcome, too.
"Yes well," R'enh coughed and shuffled his boot against the floor.
"Have you seen Talryne yet? She was making everyone aware of
her distress earlier." Mnoranth had relayed some of it to him.
"She came in while the healers were still patching me up. She calmed
down after she got to talk to me." If the situation was reversed, he
knew he would have been just as worried.
"Oh good," he said with a wry smile. At least she wouldn't be
frantically dancing around outside the infirmary. "I imagine she'll be
taking care of anything you might need, but be sure to have Loseth
bespeak Mnoranth if there's anything you need me to do." Secretly he
was just a tiny bit jealous of his friends relationship. Not that he
had any designs on Talryne. It was more just the fact that he had
someone who cared enough about him to make a big fuss like she had earlier.
He saw a healer looking at him rather sternly from the other side of
the room so he patted his fingers against the table next to N'vanik.
"Okay, it looks like the healers want you to rest. I'll be back
tomorrow."
"See you then." Watching him walk away, N'vanik thought, **yeah, I
could live with him in charge.**
