After seeing N'vanik, she went in search of the other person she
wanted to talk to. He'd be running the wing now, she knew. He'd also
be serving as temporary Weyrleader if some matters cropped up that
needed tending probably. Rhosyn wondered how he was taking things. She
also wanted to know if he had seen anything.
R'enh sat in N'vanik's office and pushed through the never ending
hidework that went along with that job. N'vanik hadn't been behind but
it had taken R'enh some time to get up to speed and he was plugging
away at trying to get caught up from the resulting lag. He'd been at
it for hours and stood up to stretch and get a fresh cup of klah.
Opening the door, she poked her head in, and saw that he hadn't looked
up just yet. He looked properly studious. "Weyrleader sir?" she asked
innocently, watching for his reaction.
"One moment," he said without looking up. The voice was familiar and
after a long moment he finished his thought and looked up and
immediately grinned. "Rhosyn!"
"Mmm...thought I might catch you doing something naughty, but instead
what do I find? A hardworking lout who can't even take time for his
friends." She entered and shut the door behind her, thinking about her
visit with N'vanik. "Cyradis came to tell me about him and I came to
see him today. He's okay so that's sorted, but I wondered what you
might be up to and if...did you see it happen?"
He chuckled at her first words but then his eyes clouded. "Yes," he
said. "I saw it all. Or, well most of it."
"Tell me," she directed. It wasn't an order, but it was clear she
needed to hear it-from him. She sat down and and looked around, having
not really been in this office too often, it was usually other places.
"The wind was gusty while a weyrling pair delivered firestone. A clump
of thread blew into them, they flicked etween but were injured and
the rider unconscious when they came back. He was right in the best
position to catch them." R'enh shrugged. He hadn't seen much more than
that. He'd also been fighting thread at the time or rather Mnoranth had.
"Loseth told us N'vanik had been injured in the catch."
"Mmm....how are things here?" Of course she was curious to know how
people were reacting to their Weyrleader being injured, even if it
wasn't badly. She knew N'vanik was worried about there being a flight
before he could manage anything, but that was up to Loseth, not him,
and the bronze was fine.
"Busy," he grinned, lifting his hands to indicate all the hides he was
working on. "Though our Wingthird has really stepped up."
"Oh that's nice. Wish I had a wingthird." She sighed with a hint of jealousy.
"Course, I am finally getting around to training my wingsecond."
"Well that's good," he said in a positive manner. "How is it going?"
He knew there were issues with the woman in question and it had been a
thorn in Rhosyn's side for some time.
"Well, it's going to be a long process I think, but I'm pretty sure some of it
will sink in at least. Otherwise I just have to make sure that I am
never incapacitated. I don't have that luxury like N'vanik does." She
snorted, trying to make light of the situation.
"Hey, You're making the effort." He knew he was lucky to have the help
of a competent Wingthird at a time like this. As far as experience
showed him, there were always problems to be handled and someone to
step up and handle them. "I'm sure you'll bring her up to speed. She
wasn't chosen by gold for nothing."
"I keep telling myself that." Just like there were good and bad riders
in general, there were good and bad goldriders. Rhosyn liked to think
her old Weyrwoman was one of the bad ones. She sincerely hoped that
Lenala could be improved because the Weyr depended upon it. If
not...it wasn't as if she could just trade out Vilarth like she could
an old dress. At least they had a good flight this time, she told
herself quietly. "So what else is going on? Last time we talked there
was a girl."
A slow smile spread across his face. He wasn't quite sure how he was
getting on with Aishara. One moment they were spending time together
and the next he could only find her if he had Mnoranth's or Dancer's
help. "It's moving along slowly," he said. That might be a little
optimistic but then he felt optimistic about the greenrider.
"Ah well slow can be good sometimes." That usually meant it might be
more than a fling or things were rocky. R'enh didn't look upset though,
so that meant interesting things perhaps.
"Well see," he smiled. "Are you hungry? I can send for something."
"Nah, I'm going to head back. Just wanted to check on you two and make
sure the Weyr wasn't falling down. I have to get back to my own time or my
body will have its revenge." She gave a lopsided expression but her eyes told
more than it did. "Watch after him, will you?"
"I will," he said and moved around the desk. R'enh reached out for the
small woman who'd figured so large in his life thus far. He enfolded
her in a warm hug, then smiled down into her eyes. "You take care of
yourself Rhosyn."
"Aye well, it'll take a lot to kill me I think. Not even thread has managed that
one yet." Her eyes twinkled with her mirth and slight pride before she hugged
him back and got on her toes to kiss his cheek. "Now behave. I don't want any
more wake ups in the middle of the night." Letting go, she turned around and
took her leave, heading toward the Bowl and the weyrling who would take her
home.
