}: Please attempt just for one time to be serious. :{ Vicarth's deep rumble
was a bit pleading. }: No jokes. No pranks.... :{
**Stand up straight, eat my veggies...I get it. Calm down, big guy. It'll be
just fine.** Z'an grinned up at his brown and gave him a light,
affectionate slap. **I'll behave."**
}: That's what you said last time.:{ The big brown sighed and rested
his head on his fore claws, before drumming them on his blunt nose.
Z'an chuckled and tucked his hides beneath his arm as he bounded
up the steps to the Weyrleaders's office. He gave a sharp rap on the
door and waited.
R'enh didn't look up from his stack of hides. It seemed that all he'd
done since N'vanik had been injured was hidework. Of course he was
doing double duty. Both his own hides for the wing and N'vanik's for
the Weyr. It all added up to quite a load. But he wasn't going to dump
a big mess on the Weyrleader when he finally could resume his duties.
"Come," he called out in response to the knock.
Z'an strode in and saluted with only a minor flourish. "Brownrider Z'an,
reporting in as a transfer." He paused and flicked his eyes to the knots
on the other man's shoulder. He blinked and arched a brow. "And.....you're
not the Weyrleader." He paused and scratched his head. "Am I in the wrong
office?"
"No you're not in the wrong office," R'enh sat back in the chair with
a half smile. "The Weyrleader was injured in a recent Fall. I'm his
second." He swept a hand toward the two chairs across from him. "Have
a seat Z'an
"That would explain it then." Z'an presented him with his transfer hides
and sat in the chair, extending his long legs out in front of him. He
glanced
around for a moment and then glanced at the hides. "What ever it may say in
there, it's probably not true. And if it is, then...well..." He
flashed a grin. "I can explain."
R'enh added the other half of the smile. Hadn't he said much the same
thing to N'vanik when he'd transferred in. "I'm sure you can," he
said.
"So, why did you decide to transfer to Dolphin Cove?"
The response was immediate as Z'an's grin grew wider. "New women."
Z'an was suddenly filled with the image of Vicarth beating his head
repeatedly on a large stone. He fully doubted the brown was actually
doing that, but it left no doubt as to what his brown was thinking.
In order to mollify the brown, Z'an straightened just a little.
Despite his grin, he continued. "But other than that...a new place.
New wings. Better weather. Etcetera."
R'enh smiled back. His own thoughts had tended in that direction when
he first came. But then he had an additional motivation... ambition.
Here he was in the Weyrleaders chair, even though it was temporary,
still he knew he was ready if the job fell to him when Panitath
finally Rose. "Of course," he said lightly. Then his eyes took on a
bit more intensity. "What do you feel are your strengths?"
Ah, now they were getting to the meat of things. Z'an arched a brow and
sat up, his smile still lingering on his lips. "Besides my obvious charm?"
Vicarth gave a mental groan, but Z'an continued. "My brown, of course.
He's strong, capable, and flies Thread almost as well as a bronze. "
There was no small hint of pride in his words. "And despite what
I may act, I work hard at what I do. " His smile dropped and for the
moment he matched R'enh's intensity. "I don't quit."
R'enh didn't roll his eyes at Z'an, the guy was giving him a piece of
his own medicine to be sure. Not long ago R'enh himself would have
taking a smiliar tack with that question. "Good to know," he nodded
and made a note. "Do you have experience with leading sixes or nines?"
Those were the smaller units within the wing that could be redeployed
depending on the formation called by the Wingleader.
Ah..getting to the hearty meat of the conversation...and to his mind,
far better than the usual 'get to know you' blather. "Yes, I've done
both and in several different wing formations. Vicarth is experienced
and has a good capacity for leading small groups. Will I be called upon
for that?"
"Its a possibility. We'll see what you can do in drills" he smiled.
Truthfully he could use another mature and solid brown rider like
Sh'dori, who was able lead small groups almost effortlessly. He'd been
impressed by how he'd stepped up the day N'vanik had been injured.
Their Wingthird's blue had already tired and gone back to the Weyr
when but Sh'dori and his Rahmuth had steadied the entire left side of
the wing.
"Have you met the Headwoman yet?" He had no doubt Qorri would take
good care of the new rider.
Z'an nodded in agreement. "That's reasonable." At the mention of the
headwoman, his lips lifted slightly. "No, I've not. I came here first.
I don't even know where my weyr'll be. "
"Alright," said the bronzerider with a tilt of his head. "Off with
you. Her offices is easy to find down in the lower caverns. Take a
right out the door and follow the stairs down at the end of the hall."
He wanted the new rider to get settled as soon as possible. "Wing
meeting and drills tomorrow after breakfast. The wing common room is
right across the hall."
Z'an rose and gave a slight bow, only enough to be considered barely
respectful. "I'll see you there then."
