At least he kept his stomach from turning itself inside out all over
the kind dragonrider who had picked him up from Green Valley. The
utter blackness of /between/ was even worse than most of the
Harper stories he'd heard. He chuckled at himself when he finally had
his feet back on the ground. "So you really think you want to do this
do you?"
Finally, with his stomach settled he knew he needed to find the
headwoman and made his way to her office to present his token.
"Ma'am," he said wrapping on her door frame.
She was actually taking a nap just then after having lunch and Qorri
didn't like being surprised. Sighing, she rubbed her face and moved a bit
in her chair. "Who's there?"
"Excuse me Ma'am," Lecordin said politely taking a step into the room.
"I've just arrived and was told I should see you?" He held up the
token Oria had given him when he was searched.
It was obvious what had happened. With Panitath having flown, the Searchers
were out. Qorri looked over the lad then took the token. Checking the details
and recording them quickly, she was quiet for a few moments. "So you want
to be a dragonrider then, do you?"
"Yes ma'am," he replied instantly.
"And you realize there's a high chance that you could end up maimed or
killed young?" She never sugar coated it. Some of these hold kids came
in and thought they knew everything from all the ballads. They had
never seen riders walking around with one arm or one leg.
He raised a corner of his mouth in a half smile. "Yes," he said. "I
realize that is a possibility. But it's a good chance for a future
that matters. Especially for someone like me." A person from the wrong
side of the sheets had to work twice as hard to be thought half as
good out in the holds. Here, it didn't matter at all.
"Hm well then I need a name, family, and anything else I need to know
until the healers check you and see you're fit." She readied herself
to get the information down, watching the boy quickly for any telltale
signs of problems. They usually came out when Qorri asked about
background.
"My name is Lecordin," he said. "I'm from Green Valley. It's a small
place beholden to Emerald Falls Hold. My mother and grandparents are
innkeepers there and I was an Assistant Understeward." Because of his
own profession he understood the need for good information.
"How many turns have you?" That was important because if he was young enough,
she had to have permission from the parents. Usually the searchriders
took care of
that bit, but Qorri always checked.
"Nineteen," he acknowledged.
Then he had his majority so she didn't have to worry. "Have you ever been to
a Weyr?" That was another big question with numerous consequences.
"No ma'am," he said. A slow flush crept up his cheeks at the sights
he'd seen in the bowl on his way to her office.
"Hmmm well I know you've probably been told that people act differently here.
Because of the dragons, it's necessary for people to be open. So we
can't tolerate closed attitudes." Her eyes narrowed, considering the boy.
"Yes I have heard that," though most of it had been in whispers and
rumors amongst his friends when they'd been growing up. "Okay," he
added to her challenge.
"And I know that saying it now might be different when confronted with it
later, but there it is. While you're here you will be in my care until
you impress,
though the Weyrlingmaster will be responsible for your lessons. We have chores
assigned and you will keep your cot clean." She dug around and produced a set
of knots. "Do you have any questions, Lecordin?"
"Nothing out of the ordinary, ma'am." He smiled. "Quarters, food,
those kinds of things. Is there someone I should talk to about that?"
"Ah no. I'm about to take you to the barracks. One of the other candidates will
show you where the food is." She got up and grunted before gesturing for him to
follow.
He stood back out of her way and then fell in a couple of paces behind
her hefting his bag on his shoulder. Food sounded really good. He
hadn't had a chance to eat before he'd left home.this morning.
