The headwoman walked to the hatching grounds, not yet aware if Cyradis
was in the weyr or in the grounds themselves. It was hot, either way,
so she hoped the woman was keeping cool. She herself was contemplating
a bath in the seawater. Wiping her face with a kerchief, she
tucked it back between her breasts and walked inside, looking around
for any sign of the goldrider. They needed to get these arrangements
nailed down or this hatching would not go off. It was Cyradis' first
so it would set the bar and Qorri was not stupid. If it didn't go
right, they wouldn't blame the Weyrwoman-it would be her fault.
"Qorri!" Cyradis greeted the dour Headwoman with a smile. The
clutching had gone far better than she'd had any right to expect and
she was happy with N'vanik for the first time in months. "Just the
woman I wanted to see."
"Aye Weyrwoman, see me now since I may be melted away in a sevenday
or so." She was beginning to think Dolphin Cove was far too warm for her tastes.
Then again, Qorri hadn't had time to get down to the beach recently. She headed
inside and came to a stop, her hides in hand. "So it's time we have a hatching
which means you and I need to get organized."
"It is a bit warm," said the Weyrwoman as she waved her fan. It was a
lovely gift from K'deren that she kept with her constantly. When the
headwoman mentioned organizing she nodded. "Indeed we do," agreed
Cyradis. "I'm sure you have this well in hand," she added. Qorri had
been doing this at Dolphin Cove for many turns. "What do you have in
mind?"
"Obviously, you can choose the menu, but I do have a list of what we
have on hand to choose from for that. Quarters, guests, and that sort
of thing is handled since everyone has standing invitations. Are there
any special arrangements you would like made?" She ran through the
list inside her head, thinking of the items
she always went over.
"I know there are a lot of standing invitations but I'd like to do
some personal ones to the beholden Lords and Ladies. I'll have them
delivered by some of our senior weyrlings." She hadn't done any formal
invitations while here so she was unfamiliar with their Harper staff
other than the archivist who took care of her records room. "Do we
have a harper with a particularly fine hand," she asked.
"The scribe aye." Qorri knew they were much shorter on harpers these days
since the Hall had moved. Still and all, though, they could find someone to do
that sort of thing. "The printer may not have moved yet though, if you
wanted to go that route."
"I think I'd like the hand written ones actually." Then she decided to
move on to the next item on the agenda. She was going to break just a
little with tradition at the hatching though she didn't really know
how it would go over. "I'd like two extra seats in the Weyrleaders'
box at the hatching itself. One for Talryne just behind N'vanik's
shoulder and the other for K'deren behind mine. Of course all the
visiting Weyrleaders will have their designated seats as will the
Lords and Ladies. Craft Masters, etcetera," she waved a hand knowing
Qorri had been all through this before.
She named off several of her favorite foods for the feast. "Is there
anything N'vanik enjoys particularly?"
That was a curious request and Qorri found herself mulling it over.
"Weyrwoman, if you don't mind me butting in-you need to ask N'vanik or
Talryne before you put those seating arrangements into place.
She's....she doesn't like to be the center of attention." And as it
was, Qorri wondered if N'vanik might not like the Wingsecond sitting
that close, but she didn't voice it.
"Thank you Qorri," she smiled. "I'll talk to N'vanik about it, but at
this point just go ahead and set it up that way and if Talryne doesn't
wish to sit there that is her choice."
"Now, what do we have in season for the feast?"
"Mmm...shellfish, packtail, spiderclaws, we can always do herdbeast
meat but the seafood we can get much higher amounts of. Some wherry
but not too much. Plenty of vegetables and of course we have yellowfruit,
citron, redfruit, grapes...." She went down her list.
Cyradis nodded. "A variety of seafood is always nice," she smiled. "Oh
and can your cook make some of those croquettes of hers? They're so
good with that Amber Hills white I brought back from the last trip."
"The fish ones?" Qorri had to ask because there were different sorts,
though the fish ones she made more often.
"Yes, the fish ones with that citron herb sauce she makes. That is one
of my favorite things."
Making a mark, Qorri decided that a menu with more seafood but with a
few options for the folks that didn't like it would probably be best.
"If we save on the food, we can perhaps offer better wine." She knew
that would get the Weyrwoman's interest.
"Excellent," she said. Then turned to the topic nearer her heart in
that moment. "K'deren and I have agreed to Weyrmate." It was her own
job to mark that down in the Weyr's records but Cyradis knew the
Headwoman had her own records and things to be arranged because of it.
"He'll be moving in with me, obviously."
Qorri didn't comment on the personal aspect of it, knowing that
Cyradis' decision and her business. "Very well and his things?"
"I believe he'll transfer what he wants. But he can let you know what
he wishes to keep and what should be released to general stores."
"And when is this happening?" She needed to know because the weyr
would have to be cleaned and everything stored. Since he did have rank,
it was a good-sized weyr. It could also mean someone else who had been
waiting could take it.
"Oh, he's already started," she said. "But I'm not sure when he'll be
finished." He'd been staying with her every night and gradually moving
his things while they decided when to tell the children.
She nodded at the headwoman. "I think that's all for now Qorri," she
said. "I've got a meeting with the Weyrleader to fit in before
Panitath needs me again."
