N'vanik poked his head into her office. "Hey Qorri, how are things
going?"
Picking her head off of her desk, she peered back at the
Weyrleader. "We will
have a good hatching. We will. And no one will
complain." Her look said if they
did, she would find a way to put
tunnelsnakes in their bed.
"Planning every last detail?" He leaned
against the wall.
"What it is left to me to plan. The rest is the
Weyrwoman's business, but at
least I get to organize it. You have your
pickups arranged?" She knew he did,
but she had to ask anyway. It would feel
good when he told her yes.
"Yes. It's almost routine now." The first
time, he'd been worried
about making mistakes. Forgetting people, even
important people.
"Wonderful. What about the harpers now that they're
mostly moved?" That
was going to be a change-not having plenty of
entertainment in house. "Do
we have enough?"
"It feels like we don't,
but that's because we've had so many harpers
running round for so long. We
still have more harpers than a typical
Hatching." He was sorry to see them
trickling away to the new Hall,
little by little.
"Mmmm." She stopped
rubbing her eyes and looked back at him.
Qorri didn't know quite how to bring
it up, but it was one of those
things and if anyone would speak to N'vanik
about it, it was her. "So
any guesses as to why Panitath is completely
broody?"
He shrugged. "Who knows why golds or their riders do what they
do?"
"Hm. Just wondering if the Weyrwoman is mad again really," Qorri
shrugged
it off, but she knew things were different with this one than they
had been with
Meledei and Jyramikah and some of the others.
"She
seemed happy enough at the Clutching."
"Fair enough." Qorri let go of the
topic, deciding that it was none of her business.
She shuffled some things
around and then went into a few of the questions she had.
"So...are any of
the.." She hated the word-dragonless. "recently hurt folks going to
join
my ranks?"
N'vanik knew what she meant by that particular
wording, since she'd
used it before. Every time he dealt with dragonless
riders it was like
a punch to the gut. "I think Cetaro might be cleared by
the
mindhealers soon, but ... he's mentioned he might go back to
his
family's hold."
"Oh well that might be good then," the headwoman
replied, pulling herself
back against the edge of the seat. Her eyes
skittered, wondering if Cyradis
had spoken to him about it yet. "Did the
Weyrwoman mention her seating
preferences for the Hatching?"
He arched
an eyebrow. "No."
"Ah hm. Well I asked her to talk to you about it but
she wants Talryne to sit
with you and K'deren with her. I know Talryne
doesn't like to be...public." Not
to mention Qorri wondered about the other
thing, but she watched for N'vanik's
reaction.
"She's fine coming out
for a few dances, but the Hatching itself..."
He crossed his arms. "I'm
worried it's too much for her, and if I ask,
she might force herself to come
because she thinks it'll make me
happy."
"Well you have to tell
Cyradis no or you have to ask." Hating to be in the middle
of this, Qorri
knew that sometimes she was the go-between for the Weyrleaders
due to her
certain position and power in the Weyr. It was what it was and she
would
do her duty. "I mean if Cyradis asked her..Talryne would probably
not know what to do
and wouldn't be honest anyway."
"I'll tell
Cyradis she's not coming. Maybe I'll ask Tal for next
time." If he asked when
there wasn't a Hatching coming up, maybe she
wouldn't feel pressured to say
yes. He'd try to make it an offhand
question.
"Mmmk. Just thought you
should know." Qorri was protective of Talryne as well,
though everyone knew
Meledei was her favorite. Probably something to do with the
young goldrider
having lost her parents in that huge shake.
"Has Cyradis been easy to
work with for the planning?" He and the
Weyrwoman were often at odds, but he
hoped that wasn't the case for
others.
"Well besides the seating
business, everything has been relatively smooth.
Course, she's moving K'deren
in with her so I have to make arrangements
for that as well." Qorri thought
N'vanik might want a heads up on that one
in case he ever dropped in on the
Weyrwoman.
"She mentioned that at our last meeting. It's good. It means
she's
settling in." Unlike the last Weyrwoman.
"Yeah." She was
detecting a note of something interesting in that last
statement, but she
didn't press. "Do I hear a bit of faith?"
He chuckled. "Maybe cautious
hope."
"Mmm well, glad you haven't turned into a complete cynic anyway.
You have
to keep some hope." Qorri threw a glass at him before a skin
followed.
"Now drink up m'boy before I release you to other
duties."
He laughed and filled the glass. While he and Cyradis were
getting
along better he wished, not for the first time, that Qorri was
a goldrider.
