Cosani sighed, wiggling her toes in the sand. Shalith was playing in
the waves with a few other greens. What a perfect day.
Sitting under a tree near the lake shore, Z'an adjusted the
tuning pegs of his gitar. It was slightly flat and the off tone
of the strings had already set his teeth on edge. Easy to
fix, though. Humming softly to himself, he tested the strings
again, tilting his head and closing his eyes to listen to the
notes. Better. Much better.
He nodded to himself and then, setting the instrument across
his lap, strummed it lightly. His fingers flexed before starting
a slow picked melody, callused fingertips finding the strings
with ease.
Cosani turned and watched him with a slight frown, not sure if she
liked the music or if it was bothering her.
Looking up as he noticed the pretty girl turning, Z'an offered
her a light smile and suddenly the chords became playful,
the notes becoming a light hearted reel.
She rolled her eyes. Another flirt. The Weyr was full of them.
"My poor ego." At the rolled eyes, Z'an could be seen giving a playful pout,
but returned back to his gitar.Changing the melody,
he moved into a ballad. A smooth tenor voice rolled from his
lips as his fingers glided carefully over the strings.
"You can take your singing to the dining cavern. I'm not interested."
Cosani crossed her arms.
Z'an looked up and brow dark brows rose. "I wasn't singing just for
you. I was singing for fun." His lips lifted, hardly stung by her
abrupt dismissal.
"Well, _I_ was trying to relax."
Sighing softly, Z'an shook his head. "And I'm not stopping you."
"Good." She lay down on the warm sand, draping an arm over her eyes to
block out the sun. She half listed to Shalith chatting with the other
dragons.
Perhaps it was out of sheer annoyance with the crabby girl, or
perhaps because he simply wanted to enjoy himself as well,
Z'an's smile grew and he pointedly began to strum again,
going back to a light hearted reel.
With an exaggerated sigh, Cosani stood up. She glared at Z'an before
stalking off, headed for somewhere out of earshot.
Normally, he would have let her, but something of the prankster in him
made him hop up and follow her. "Oh come on. Don't you enjoy music?"
"Not _your_ music, no." She kept walking without looking at him. This
man was so annoying. Not like R'enh. She wished the bronzerider would
follow her around like this.
"And what's wrong with mine?" Z'an was a bit stung. He knew he could
play and sing. "Or is it you're just a bit cranky?"
"I don't like lame attempts at flirting, and I don't like noise when
I'm trying to relax." Cosani wondered if she'd have to get Shalith to
chase him off.
He hadn't been trying to flirt with the girl! But for once, Z'an didn't
bother
to try to tell her that. Instead he rolled his eyes and stalked back to his
spot under the tree, pointedly pulling his gitar on his lap to strum it.
The chord was a bit harsh, but he took a deep breath, shook his head
and tried again, the music smoothing.
Cosani made it far enough away that he was out of earshot. With a
little sigh she settled onto the warm sand and hoped no one would
bother her this time.
