"What'll I do when you are far away and I am blue, what'll I do?"
Meledei wasn't harper trained, but she had a decent voice and she
enjoyed singing. Sometimes it helped break up the monotony of certain
jobs, like copying records. She didn't have to really think about the
words since she was just copying them and it made a tedious job a
little less boring. She straightened up and stretched, then continued
in her singing as her hand glided over, marking the parchment.
A pleasant tenor floated down the hall joining her in song until R'enh
peaked his head around the door jam. "Hello beautiful," he grinned
with a waggle of his eyebrows. "I have some records for you."
"Hey R'enh! Long time no see!" Meledei seemed to miss the
bronzerider for some reason or another. "Records for me? Oh you
shouldn't have." She fluttered her eyelashes then laughed before she
reached out to take the records. "How have you been?"
"Overworked," he quipped. He set the records down on the desk and put
a finger on them. "These are from when I was acting Weyrleader." He
came around to plant a kiss on her cheek. "How have _you_
been?"
"I've been good. Just working, then relaxing." Meledei turned the
records to glance over them briefly. "Been meaning to get out of the
Weyr for a bit, but feeling too lazy to actually do it as of late."
R'enh grinned and nodded. "I know that feeling. I'm just too busy
except for rest day."
"Well, I can't do it on days that aren't on rest days either."
Meledei reached out to playfully poke the bronzerider in his arm.
"What, you think I'm not busy too?"
He rubbed his arm in mock pain. But his grin gave him away. "Oh I
thought all you gold riders sat around eating sweets and having your
feet rubbed all day."
"Don't I wish. I haven't had my feet rubbed in forever." Meledei
snorted and shook her head. "Ah well, I suppose there are other
pleasures in life. So how's your lady doing?"
She seemed to be avoiding him at the moment and he couldn't really
figure out why so he just brushed off the question with a shrug and a
non committal grunt. But then an evil grin twisted his smile. "You
know I'll massage anything you like don't you?" he leaned on the
counter next to the hides he'd just placed there.
"I'm sure you would." Meledei laughed and shook her head. "I might
take you up on your offer if I get desperate. I'm sure though you have
some other people who would like such ministrations."
He straightened up and stood there for a moment as his head tilted and
he weighed her words. Maybe she didn't really understand what she'd
just said. He wasn't unusually thin skinned but her words stung more
than just a little.
"Well, I hope you don't get _desperate_ my Lady," he said sweeping a
small bow. "And I'm no ones last resort," This time there was no
smile, no gleam in his eye. "I'm sure you have much more important
things to do than chat with me." He backed up a step and turned for
the door.
"I'll just go find someone else to have dinner with then. Good day,
goldrider." The last floated back as he sailed through the door.
Meledei stared at the door for a moment before she thought to call
out. She hadn't expected that reaction. She'd just been teasing, but
evidently he had taken it in a much different way than she had
anticipated. Once the surprise wore off, she stood and hurried to the
door, but she was too late. Meledei sighed. Open mouth, insert foot.
She hadn't meant anything by the comment, not really. She thought
about going after him, but decided to wait. If he was really mad, it
might be best to wait for him to cool down before going to apologize.
