D'hol

D'hol

Sitting down at a small table, D'hol considered his small glass in front of
him. With a soft exhalation, he slowly poured a small amount of quikal into
the cup. He sipped slowly, and breathed deep, letting the heat flow down his
throat with relish.

She watched him from where she stood. Qorri was also watching her drudges,
making sure they cleaned the floors and tables like she had asked. **So that's
the new wingleader.** They hadn't met, mainly because she had only had to
send a few drudges to ready his quarters and one of her assistants dealt
with his requests. She had been so busy getting ready for the hatching that
her other duties had been delegated. **Well better now than later eh?**

So she started walking that way, inspecting the tables as she went. When she
came to his, Qorri smiled. "Good evening to you, is there anything we can
get you, Wingleader?"

The bronzerider looked up, putting his glass down at her approach.
"Headwoman...Qorri, isn't it?" He inclined his head. "No, I'm fine. Just
enjoying a drink, but thank you."

"Well met. I trust you found your weyr and the arrangements made to your
liking?" Never let it be known that someone had found any of her staff's
work lacking. Qorri would not have that, especially if it was a Wingleader
that needed something. Of course Dolphin Cove didn't have the electricity
and other conveniences some of the other Weyrs had, but she did her best to
make up for it with furnishings and other things.

"Yes, very much, thank you." D'hol agreed and then took another sip of
his drink. "Your staff is quite efficient."

"Glad to hear you say that. We don't have much time to do things due to the
heat, so we take advantage of what we do have." Indeed, it was sometimes
tiresome
cooking at strange candlemarks but she had gotten used to it. Qorri's own
schedule
was adjusted because of it, though.

"They gave me a pleasant welcome." His lips lifted humorlessly. "Far better
than the majority here, actually. You should be proud of them."

Somewhere in there she detected a note of unhappiness. It wasn't her
business and she knew that-but she was the headwoman and this was her Weyr
and her folk and they were all her business one way or another. "Oh?
Thinking of leaving so soon? Why is that? We've got beautiful views, an easy climate,
and the ocean is just over there you know. And never let it be said I
starved you." She was fishing, but it was also fun to tease. Even if this one was far
older than the ones she liked.

"Leaving?" D'hol blinked in surprise. "Sweet Faranth, no. That hadn't even
come up in my thoughts." He leaned back in his seat and considered her for a
long moment. "Oh, the Weyr is lovely certainly. I had no doubts that it
would be." His lip curled slightly. "And the food is certainly more than
adequate."

"Good then. We do need an adequate Wingleader. Unfortunately most of our
bronzeriders are on the young side or already in leadership." It was a side
effect of an unexpected Pass and then the accident with the previous
Weyrleader who had taken so many with him. Qorri's eyes clouded over at that
memory.

"Definitely young." D'hol frowned. "And hot tempered. At least Cyradis
has a good head on her shoulders. We'll need that of her." He drummed his
fingers on the table. "It concerns me."

Qorri wasn't exactly on Cyradis' side just yet, though the woman was capable
if nothing else so she kept her mouth shut on that score. Better to listen.
"We're a Weyr in recovery. Doing our best, but it's not as if the other
Weyrs are sending us their veterans. And with a new Pass just started, there
aren't many veterans anyway as far as thread goes. So we do what we can." Indeed,
for most of Qorri's life there had been no thread.

"Oh, I realize that." He exhaled and frowned deeply. "We all do what we have
to, don't we?"

"That's the nature of things." Remembering her husband dying and how she had
ended up at the Weyr in the first place, she was quiet for a few moments
before she put that lazy grin back on her face. "Well I'm glad you've got
what you need and if there's ever anything, you're more than welcome to come find me
or one of my folk."

"Actually, you can help me." He looked up at offered a faint smile. "You
can tell me a bit more about what to expect from the ranking riders here."

**So maybe he isn't stupid** She slid into one of the empty seats across from him
and met his eyes for a moment, thinking he was a new puzzle to figure out. And it
was clear Qorri had plenty of time to do that. Riders died and went-she was always
here. "Expect how and from whom?"

D'hol's gaze was intent. "Tell me about N'vanik for starters."

"N'vanik is our Weyrleader..he came here from Dragonsfall. Of course it was a mess
when Traelyn came over and ended up being Weyrwoman but anyway. So the pair of
them were our Weyrleaders after such a mess and with the Pass and all...he worked
hard to keep the Weyr together. Then Traelyn left... and we received Janani. She didn't
last very long, though N'vanik remained Weyrleader then too."

"Our Weyrleader is a good man who values hard work and dedication. Above all, he pays
particular respect to those who are loyal to the Weyr. Too many have left-but despite finding
himself in his position after a catastrophe, he stuck it out and made the best of it and now
we're rebuilding since we may have a stable Weyrwoman." Qorri knew it went without saying
that the man never shirked his duty either.

D'hol listened carefully, absorbing the information with a sharp ear. So, the man was dedicated and had
succeeded over adversity. Hmmm...He would have to reevaluate his opinion of the man, but for now,
he was simply gathering information. He waved a hand slightly at her comment about Cyradis. "She is stable.
You don't need to worry about that."

**That's what everyone thought about Traelyn and Janani too and look what happened.** Qorri
didn't say anything though, just traced her finger across the table. "Both of our last two Weyrwomen
came from Dragonsfall. Cyradis is from Dragonsfall. So forgive me if I decide to just wait and see."
N'vanik had come from there, but he hadn't impressed there. No, all the menfolk that stayed were
usually from Vista Point. "So, who else did you want to know about hm?"

D'hol gave a slight understanding nod. He could understand that, but what he remembered from
earlier was that Cyradis, for all of her faults, was dedicated. Instead, he turned his mind back
to the young Weyrleader. Qorri had said little of the faults of N'vanik. It could be that she
was loyal to the young bronzerider so he had to tread carefully. "What about those he does
not particularly like?"

"It takes quite a bit to get on his bad side, but he does have a temper once you're on it. However,
there have been a few that have managed to get themselves off it-showing him that they would
do their duty to the Weyr and to him as its Weyrleader." Then again, she suspected most bronzeriders
didn't enjoy insubordination or disrespect to their rank so Qorri didn't really think it warranted much
attention.

"Hmm.." D'hol was noncommittal on her statement, instead taking a drink of wine as he thought. He could,
he decided, start paying attention to the few bits of gossip that he could hear from the drudges. Usually,
gossip had a grain of truth to it. Perhaps not much, but a little. But to be honest, he simply didn't like
the young pup and his foolish devotion to his yapping companion of a Weyrwoman. It just rubbed him
raw the way he had been taken to task by the Weyrleader for what had been and should have
remained a personal issue. He looked at Qorri and inclined his head. "Thank you, Qorri."

"Mmm you're welcome." She got up and went to the next round of tables, wondering again if this one
was going to fit in. One thing was for certain-when Panitath went up next, they really didn't need anymore
change. Thankfully, it would be awhile before that happened.
