Ar'lis nearly stumbled out of the flight room that encased Syntara and the winner of her flight. His pride was stinging from the blow of losing, his head was reeling, his nerves were throbbing, and his body was clamoring for a woman's touch.

He growled his frustration, his need for a dragon-roused release.

Willing, eager hands caressed him, trying to coax him into leaving with her. He snarled and looked down into the drudge's pretty face. Black hair framed high cheekbones and drifted down her shoulders. Her eyes were dark, her expression knowing. Again she tugged at him, encouraging him to follow her with her eyes and the creative urgings of her hands. And he almost did go with her, hardly caring about anything save his lust.

But the part of him that was still human enough to think and reason balked. He didn't understand why - didn't sharding _want_ to understand why his thoughts suddenly turned to a young woman with red hair, brown eyes and cold feet.

His desire sharpened, found a focus.

Tearing himself away from the drudge, he lunged through the crowd of frustrated, angry men and willing women, making his way as quickly as his pride would allow back towards his weyr.

Gaiya smiled indulgently as she pulled another sock out from between the sofa cushions. Ar'lis was busy and she needed some way to entertain herself while she waited. She'd already had her bath, and her auburn hair was piled high and wrapped in a towel on top of her head. She cradled a basked against her hip that she was filling with stray bits of laundry. Next she would probably see about tackling the dust that swirled with the draft in corners of the room and high on shelves.

Suddenly the door opened. Then closed. He saw her turn around, and he knew he couldn't mask the wild need in his eyes as he slowly began to approach her.

"Ar'lis?" she said in startled surprise. Gaiya hadn't expected him for quite a while yet. And yet she could see in his eyes why he was back too soon. It was a familiar look. She had seen it before. In fact, she had seen it recently. She hugged the basket to her as the look of raw desire in his eyes burned into her own, warming her deep down in her body. But it wasn't only the look in his eyes that made her feel the twinges of anticipation. It was the knowledge of what that look could lead to... How a man touched her when he looked at her with eyes wild with unsatisfied lust. How _L'cian_ had touched her...

The closer he got to her, the harder it was to control himself. He kept his steps slow and deliberate, heeding the small part of him that knew he shouldn't scare her. But surely she was used to men behaving certain ways after losing mating flights? One way to find out.

Ar'lis was on her so fast that the force of his coming to her knocked the basket right out of her hands. Snarling he kicked the obstructing thing away from them. He pressed his body against hers, his voice gruff as he growled, "Please."

Gaiya felt intense desire mixed with painful guilt. Ar'lis never knew about L'cian. He _shouldn't_ know... What had she to be ashamed of? It had been a flight! They were not themselves! And it wasn't as if they had ever made a promise to be exclusive. Why should she be ashamed now?

She knew the reason - it was because it was not Ar'lis's eyes that made her feel weak in the knees as she looked up into his face so sharding close to her own. It was L'cian's. It was the memory of the desperate need she felt in a cramped closet with an old fling, that suddenly felt fresh and new. Gaiya closed her eyes, trying to force those images from her mind as she wrapped her arms around Ar'lis, her _lover's_ neck and pulled him down to her in the frantic need to forget another.

He claimed her lips, forcing them apart as he bent her backward, her spine to curving into his hands. Then, snarling, he pushed her back against the table, one hand moving to grasp the edge while the other went for the buckle on his belt. He stared down into her eyes, his own gleaming with hunger.

She reached down to help him, no fear in her eyes, just a burning need to forget - to wipe the slate clean and create a new memory and not L'cian's sharding hands and eyes...

~*~*~

The dragon-lust still burned in his body as she finally went limp beneath him. The day wasn't sharding over and he had every sharding intention to keep her here until neither of them could speak coherently. He buried his face against her neck, his teeth gently latching on to the soft flesh there as he waited fo his body to catch up with his desire.

Gaiya's lip was still caught between her teeth roughtly. But it was not the pain that brought tears stinging behind her lids as she wrapped her fingers into the hair of her lover as he nibbled her neck. It was the shame, and the relief, that she had stopped herself from crying out L'cian's name in the throws of her passion. What was _wrong_ with her?!

Feeling her hands in his hair, he shifted, his body finally beginning to warm to hers again. Ar'lis raised his head, his eyes gleaming as he stared down at her passive, unresponsive face. His hands moved then, capturing her face in them, his thumbs moving along her skin just beneath her eyes. "Look at me." His voice was still rough, raspy with his dragon-incited emotions.

Shards, and now he would know. He would know she had tears in her eyes.
"Just let me catch my breath a moment," she whispered, keeping her eyes tightly shut.

He growled, his fingers moving to unbutton her blouse, his palms roughly sliding against her flesh, wanting her to warm to him like he was already warmed to her. He sharding didn't want to wait!

His lust was the distraction she needed. She sat up and began running her lips along his shoulder until skin met cloth. Gaiya burried her face in his shirt, just long enough to quickly wipe the tears from her eyes. He would not know. He _could_ not know! "Shards, I want you so bad, Ar'lis..."

Gathering her in his arms, he buried one hand in her hair and pulled her head back so he could look into her eyes. "Then take me."

"I can't take you if you're pinning me to the table," she said with a slight, teasing smile, hoping to hide her shaken confidence behind humor.

He shifted, pulling her on top of him, a slight, feral grin hinting at his lips. "Take me," he murmured before catching her mouth with his.

She was determined to do just that - to bend his body to her will, and hopefully in the process to banish all traces of L'cian from her mind.
