Description: Qorri confronts R'enh
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 3 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Meledei, N'vanik, Cyradis
She had waited until everything with Turnover had died down and Qorri
had room to breathe. Still, she thought about what Meledei had said
and being the woman that she was, she made a point to try and speak to
R'enh. So when she saw the bronzerider alone during breakfast, she sat
down opposite him.
R'enh smiled as the headwoman made herself comfortable across from him
and leaned back with his cup of Klah. "Good morning Qorri," he said.
"Morning Wingsecond. Having a good breakfast there?" Quality control was
not a bad thing from time to time. She began to butter her roll.
"Delicious as always," he replied and lifted his cup in salute.
"Ah good. Glad you're enjoying it." And then she was quiet for a long
while as she ate her own breakfast. Then after chewing on some meat
and swallowing, Qorri asked very casually, "So I hear you and Meledei
aren't good
friends anymore."
His fork paused midway to his mouth. He hadn't said a single word to
anyone other than N'vanik and he knew the Weyrleader wouldn't gossip
with the Headwoman. "Oh?" he inquired before he shoveled the eggs into
his mouth. "And who told you that?"
"She seemed very upset so I asked her why and she told me that you
both had a falling out." In this situation, R'enh was the adult and he
should have behaved as one-at least in Qorri's eyes.
He supposed it could seem that way. "That is true," he said without
change of expression. He didn't feel like airing their private
conversation with another person. "But that is between Meledei and
me."
"Meledei....is almost a daughter to me in many ways. And besides
that-she is a goldrider which means whatever upsets her may upset her
dragon and thus upset the balance of the Weyr. Elleth is due to rise
soon and with your Mnoranth possibly in contention I think it would
behoove you to work whatever it is out. Now, I'm not asking you what
it is or your side of it. I'm simply saying I don't think anyone in
Dolphin Cove needs an upset goldrider-especially not one due for a
Flight soon." She didn't need to mention the disastrous Flight at
Dragonsfall recently. Dolphin Cove needed the eggs. That couldn't
happen.
He set his mug down rather harder than he intended and his eyes
narrowed. "You don't need to educate me on my job as a bronzerider
Headwoman. I know the needs of the wings far better than you. I go
into harms way each fall to protect the people of Dolphin Cove's area,
including both you and Meledei. And for your information I did try
multiple times to apologize to her and they were neither acknowledged
nor accepted." He didn't know which was worse in his book. Meledei
talking to the headwoman about her troubles or the Headwoman feeling
she had the right or need to intervene.
"I'm sure she told you a rather different story."
"I didn't get a story. Only that you had a falling out. I don't know what was
said or who said it. And I'm not educating you on your duties or you job or
whatever else. I'm just saying that Meledei upset benefits no one, least of
all you or the Weyr." **And if you don't want to do what you have to to fix it,
simply leave her alone**
Qorri kept her gaze level, meeting his eyes without flinching or showing any of
the anger he was starting to feel. "And it is my duty to see to this
Weyr and its
riders-all of them-so don't educate me on my job, bronzerider."
At that R'enh arched a sardonic eyebrow. "Don't twist my words Qorri,
I said absolutely _nothing_ about your job! The well being of the
riders is the job of the Weyrleaders and I'll thank you to remember
that." He could easily be Weyrleader himself the next time Panitath
flew and she probably realized that. So why she was intent on getting
on his bad side right now was a mystery at the very least. "I've
already discussed this situation with Cyradis."
"But, if you didn't get a story I'm curious how you came up with an
opinion that I was somehow at fault and needed to apologize. Never
mind the fact that I've already tried. Or is it simply that she's
right because she is your favorite and rides gold?"
He took a breath and pulled back from the intensity he'd already shown
and returned to a more reasonable tone. "If Meledei is upset it is not
for my lack of trying to heal the breach. But you are _not_ in a
position to chastise me for something I have already tried to fix
especially without knowing the particulars. Rest assured, if Meledei
wishes to talk, I am most happy to discuss it with her. However, I
will not chase and flatter her until she unfreezes." **She's a
nineteen turn old twit who pouts at the slightest whim and wields her
power like a smith's hammer without realizing what it does to others
around her.** But if this woman was filling the girl's head with how
things were 'suppose' to work, no wonder Meledei was such a handful.
"I never said you needed to apologize. That word never crossed my lips.
I simply said it would be a good idea to work it out. This is not a
chastisement,
R'enh. This is me coming to you and saying that something is wrong and
it involves you and it would be good to fix it. Whether or not you do is your
business and how is your business." Qorri leaned back in the seat and prepared
to go. "The wings are the Weyrleaders' job, but it is I who see to the everyday
needs of all the riders of this Weyr." That meant when something was wrong,
she usually knew about it before anyone else did and if it was in her power to
fix it and not bother N'vanik or Cyradis, then she would.
"Are we talking with different accents? Are you not understanding me?
I already _did_ apologize, Qorri. Several times. and I've now told
you... several times. Whether you say I need to or not. It's already
been done." **Maybe it is just a female thing, they think it's a sign
of weakness if you apologize so they don't even hear you.**
"But thank you for coming and telling me the obvious. I'm sure it
makes you feel better." A wall went up behind his eyes. He was more
than finished going around in circles with yet another woman on this
subject. "Now if you'll excuse me," he picked up his cup of Klah as he
headed out of the dining hall to go shut himself in his office for a
candlemark or two.
She could see how Meledei could feel the way she did. Definitely. Her advice
in the future would be just to stay away from this one. At least there
were Z'ku and
T'nom, thank Faranth. She remained sitting there, finishing her breakfast.
