Description: The Dolphineers warn the Weyr of the impending hurricane
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Famell
Aslvor was panting. She was out of breath, but she knew she couldn't
stop. Famell had given them the most important task of alerting the
Weyr to the danger. The dolphins had swum as fast as they could and
spread the word of the terrible storm coming in from the sea. It was
unexpected. Yesterday had been a beautiful day. Even now looking at
the sky, Aslvor wouldn't have known a hurricane was on it's way, but
the dolphins had reported that it would be there within a few
candlemarks. They had to prepare.
Glancing about her, she looked for her fellow dolphineer who'd been
sent on this particular mission to warn the Weyr of the news they had
received.
Milga had no trouble staying with the older dolphineer. She was in
very good fit. All that swimming and diving. Generations living in an island
had given her a good weather sense, and she was now having the oppressive
feeling in the back of her head which often preceded storm or thunder.
Noting that Milga was right with her, Aslvor continued her trek up to
the Weyr. **Thank goodness it's not far,** she thought as she ran as
quickly as she could.
Entering the Weyr itself in such a hurry was sure to draw attention
from someone.
The headwoman was in her office, knee deep in hides. Qorri wondered how they
piled up so fast. Sighing, she gulped down some water and read the next one.
"Come on Milga," Aslvor called to her fellow dolphineer. "We need to
find the Headwoman, Weyrleader or Weyrwoman. Someone we can tell." She
darted around a few dragonriders who raised their eyebrows
quizzically. Aslvor knew exactly where the Headwoman's office was, and
it was the closest and easier to reach of those who would be able to
help.
Running up with Milga at her side, she raised her hand and knocked
rather loudly and impatiently.
"Enter," came the gentle command as Qorri leaned back into her seat,
training
her bulk to stop leaning forward over the stacks. Hopefully this would
be a welcome
distraction from the tedium.
The dolphineers entered. Aslvor looked winded. Her hair was a mess.
Her face was flushed.
"Qorri," she said rather loudly in greeting, breathing rapidly still.
"There's a hurricane coming!"
It took her a moment to shift gears and to realize what they were saying.
"When? How long do we have? And how large?" Hurricanes were common
for Dolphin Cove so they had protocol for this type of thing.
Aslvor gathered her thoughts to share what they had learned. "The
dolphins warned us. It's blowing up rather unexpectedly. It will be
here before the day is out! It's not as large as some we've dealt
with, but the winds are blowing strong and will likely cause quite a
bit of damage. The Dolphin Hall is preparing. We've sent swimmers out
to get further information and we'll relay it up here as soon as we
have it, but Hallmaster Famell wanted the warning passed on right
away." She knew the details were sketchy at best. They'd relied on the
dolphins information, which was very good, but didn't always contain
the same information people would gather.
"It _is_ heading straight for us, though," Aslvor added. "As best as
we can tell."
"Before the day is out? Today?" Even Qorri couldn't move mountains
that quick. Or so she thought. "Very well, please update me when you
know more information. Forgive me, but I need to go. We don't have
time..." She got up and threw her chair back, hurrying out of her
office. She went straight in search of the Weyrleaders. "N'vanik,
Cyradis, you in there?" she asked, hoping they might be together in
the office or at least in both of theirs which were near enough they
would hear.
Milga stood at the background, letting Aslvor do the talking. "Why
don't they have a warning bell like our dolphin bell. We could just
rung it for a warning," she asked quietly when the Headwoman burst
into action.
Aslvor watched as Qorri took action. It _was_ a sudden warning.
Normally they had more warning of the storms, but the dolphins hadn't
been able to reach them in time. "That would be a good idea," she
replied to Milga. "We should probably get back and help the Hall. I
imagine we'll be running messages throughout the day. Let's go."
Aslvor grabbed Milga's hand and started walking back as fast as she
could.
"I'm coming," Milga replied.
"What is it, Qorri?" N'vanik called from inside.
"Hurricane. Today." That was all that she thought necessary for the
moment, hoping that would make him come out of his office.
"Hurricane," Cyradis repeated from her seat across from N'vanik, but
her eyes were already unfocused as she began relaying instructions
through Panitath for the security of the Weyr.
While the Weyrleaders handled the people with dragons that they could
communicate with, Qorri did an about face to go muster up the crafters and
the Lower Caverns folk that didn't have them. That was her territory and she
didn't have much time. "Oh hey, can you get me some dragons to put those
heavy things in front of the entrances so we don't get flooded?" She almost
forgot about that.
"We will," N'vanik called. He hoped it wasn't a bad one. The one good
thing about being through so many was that the weyrfolk knew how to
prepare.
