Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 20 of Turn 3
Favercon sat cross-legged on his cot. He was lucky enough to moastly have they boys side of the barrack to himself, he thought as hs loosened his hair and shook it out of the thoung that he'd used to tie it back while fixing the loom earlier in the day.
He ran a finger or two through it, pausing to swear briefly when he found a knot in the dark mass, then settling the lot over his shoulders.
With that done, he pulled out a sewing kit, and hastily began to mend a tunic.
"Excuse me, miss. You dropped your spool." Reymer picked it up before it could roll under his cot.
Favercon turned to face the other boy. "Thank you," he said accepting the thread.
Reymer was startled by the rather man-like voice that came from the 'young woman' who sat sowing. He wanted to ask, but he was too surprised to say anything. His mouth just opened and closed as he stood staring at 'her' dumbfounded. Long hair, pretty, sowing... All the signs pointed to femininity, and yet the voice and presence in the barracks after hours suggested otherwise.
"That's better," said Favercon after a moment. His voice was cheery as he held the tunic up to the glow, checking the repair in its light.
"Looks like I sorted that one before it became a real hole."
The tunic gave him no hint as to the person's gender. It could be for a man. It could be for a woman. Reymer was becoming more and more confused.
The weaver uncrossed his legs, before getting to his feet. "Gotta check I can still get into this," he muttered, reaching up to put his sewing things out of reach. That was followed by him pulling at the lace that held the shirt he currently wore closed, before crossing his hands over the bottom and starting to pull it up and over his head.
Reymer turned to give the person their privacy, but... this was one way to know for sure... He watched out of the corner of his eye and saw...
"Shards. You _are_ a man."
"Of course," replied Favercon, watching the other lad as he slipped into the mended tunic. "Why else would I be on the male side of the barracks?"
"You sound like a man. You're built like a man. But you also look like a woman." Reymer was having a little trouble understanding just how that could be!
Favercon glanced at the other lad as he finished adjusting the tunic., realising the surprise in his face. "Maybe it's my hair," he said. "I usually have it bound up out of the way."
"I guess so," Reymer replied, still feeling like _something_ wasn't quite right.
"How does this look?" he asked. "Can I still get away with it?" Favercon flipped his hair back one more time. "I hope they won't make me cut it if I impress."
"I don't know. You still look like I girl. You might think of cutting it." Reymer couldn't think of any reason why he would _want_ to look like a girl after all.
"I meant the tunic. It was my mothers, but she gave it to me."
Reymer was sure the other candidate was teasing him now. "You want to wear your _mother's_ tunic?" he asked incredulously.
"Does it suit me?"
He could believe it! The boy was serious! "No it doesn't suit you.
It's made for a woman!"
"I like it," said Favercon. "Maybe I should ask Norek his opinion."
"But... _Why_?!" Reymer couldn't believe that the boy would chose to look feminine. Long hair and women's clothing? Was this one of those men he had heard about? One of those men who actually _liked_ other men?
Favercon meanwhile had a satisfied smile on his face. "I like this, it looks good, and when I look good I feel good."
Reymer shook his head in disbelief. He just couldn't figure out how you could be a man, and want to be like a woman too... "But it's...
unnatural."
"No it isn't, it's just me."
