The smell of baking bread floated up from the kitchens and Cyradis
smiled. K'deren hadn't come home yet and there was something she'd
wanted to mention to Qorri so she thought she'd kill two avians with
one stone.
"Qorri," she said as she came into the Kitchen area. "That bread
smells wonderful."
Looking up from where she had been shuffling cards, Qorri saw the
Weyrwoman and slipped the deck inside her beltpouch. "Mmm nothing
like fresh buttered bread. Are you hungry? Will be a few moments before
it's ready."
"I am indeed," she smiled and slid onto a stool near where the cooks
had been working. "It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a seat in
the kitchens."
"You know that you're invited, right? I mean hey...we won't kick you out."
Qorri chuckled at her own joke before she did get Cyradis something to drink
at least while she waited on the bread. "Speaking of which, what brings you
down here? Having a craving?"
Cyradis chuckled. "Oh it just smelled so sharding good, _and_ " she
waved her hand in emphasis. "I need to talk to you anyway. I thought
I'd pass along the news that N'vanik and I are interviewing for a
Weyrwoman's Second."
"Oh again? Do you think there will be any bites this time?" She knew
the Weyrleader had been trying to get another goldrider in for awhile
but it had never worked out.
"Actually I do," she said. "We've already received some hides that are
very promising and will be meeting with them soon. So, I thought
perhaps we should get her quarters ready. What do you think?"
That was an interesting proposition. "So will Jyramikah be leaving then,
in a trade...or?" Qorri was curious and she needed to know. If not, that would
be four goldrider weyrs full.
"I don't know yet," she said noncommittally. Jyramikah had kept mostly
to herself the last few months and truthfully she didn't know what the
woman wanted. "N'vanik and I will figure it out though," she smiled.
"Allright so the one on the end would be the one I'd give to your
wingsecond if it were me. Would take me about two days to do it up
right, three if the weather doesn't cooperate." Luckily those weyrs
were low, which made it easier for her to move stuff in and out of
them.
"That sounds perfect Qorri," Cyradis said. Then she watched as one of
the cooks took several loaves of bread out of the oven. "Mmmm, That
smells wonderful," she smiled at the cook.
"And let me know who it is once she's chosen. Might be able to tailor some
things to where they come from." It always helped not to be so homesick when
going to a new place. Qorri offered Cyradis some of the bread before making a
few notes on the pad attached to her belt.
"I will Qorri," she said. "You may have some knowledge about our new
goldrider from your other contacts. But of course none of these women
are currently in second positions so this will be a step up for them."
Cyradis herself had made a lateral move from another Weyr in the north
to this one but it had been for personal reasons at the time. Janani
had been younger and good at her job so she'd never even thought
events would work out the way they had to make her Senior at Dolphin
Cove. But they had, and she was happy at last. If nothing else, she
wished happiness for whomever they chose for the spot.
